GLASSBORO, NJ (April 6, 2023) – Dylan Maria slugged two home runs, including a grand slam, and Phil Sedalis had four hits, to power #19 Rowan past NJCU, 17-2, in an NJAC baseball matchup as the Profs pick up their first conference win of the year.
Maria went 4-for-5 with eight RBI, while scoring four runs. Sedalis missed hitting for the cycle as he had a single, double and triple while going 4-for-5 on the day with four runs and two RBI. Anthony Schooley was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI, while Tyler Cannon scored three times and drove in two runs for Rowan (14-6; 1-2 NJAC).
Senior Mike Shannon made the start and picked up his third win of the season, striking out three, with Charlie Russell, Braden Waller and Maria finishing out the game as the Profs’ four pitchers combined to scatter 10 NJCU hits.
NJCU (10-11; 1-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Maria got the Profs started in a big way, hitting a grand slam to score Cannon, Sedalis and Schooley and Rowan ahead, 4-1. It was his team-high seventh home run of the season and his first grand slam as a Prof.
Rowan added three in the second with back-to-back doubles by Schooley and Maria and one run scored by an NJCU error. The Profs built the lead up to 9-1 in the third inning after Sedalis slugged a two-run triple, that scored Cannon and Mason Dorsey.
The Gothic Knights added one more in the fifth on a single by Garret Allo, but Rowan scored three more in the bottom half of that inning. Maria, Chris Curcio and Jason Morgan each drove in runs to give Rowan a 12-2 lead.
A double from Cannon in the sixth brought home Dorsey, while Schooley drove in Cannon with his third hit of the day before Maria accounted for another run with a sacrifice fly to score Sedalis. It became 16-2 in the seventh when Cannon’s fielder’s choice drove in Morgan.
Maria added the final run of the game with a solo shot in the eighth and then closed out the victory by pitching the ninth inning.
The teams meet again on Friday, making the trip north for a 3:30 p.m. single game and then the Profs will be back at home on Saturday to face #21 Montclair State in an NJAC doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m.
