MARYLAND--(APRIL 28, 2023)(CNBnews)--As a reminder, most individuals that fish in Maryland’s coastal and tidal waters must have either a valid Maryland Bay or Coastal Sport Fishing License or Maryland Saltwater Angler Registration. To make obtaining the state’s free saltwater registration even easier, Maryland now provides this convenient form that does not require you to create an account in the state licensing system. In 2010, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) began requiring anglers to pay a fee and register with the National Saltwater Angler Registry before fishing for anadromous species–those that move between saltwater and freshwater habitats. To comply with this requirement. Maryland created its own free saltwater angler registration, required on an annual basis. Possession of a Maryland Bay and Coastal Sport Fishing License or Maryland Saltwater Angler Registration is required with a few exemptions. The registration is an important part of protecting Maryland’s fishing opportunities. The recreational...

Adult Black Skimmer Shorebirds are some of the most migratory animals known to science today, and the habitats they utilize for nesting and feeding are critical to maintaining a healthy weight while migrating and for successfully raising chicks. Many of these vulnerable shorebirds have seen declines since the 1970s. Factors affecting these birds include degradation of their wintering or staging grounds through development, human disturbance, pesticide use, pollution, and oil spills (Pfister et al. 1991). Pressures affecting nesting birds often lead to lower nest success and may include predators, flooding, human disturbance, and urban development (Maslo et al. 2016). Humans impact nesting birds in many ways. Human influences include, predation by introduced predators, habitat quantity and quality being diminished, and direct disturbance or destruction of nests accidentally or intentionally (Maslo, et al. 2018). Specifically, many common beach activities can have a strong impact on nest success. Many eggs are very...

image source NRA-ILA D.C. stands for District of Columbia, but one may be excused for thinking that lately, it stands for Defend Criminals, or Delusional Council, or Don’t Care. The D.C. police force has now “shrunk to a half-century low as officers leave faster than they can be replaced,” and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Robert J. Contee III expects the number to fall still further by the end of fiscal year 2024. Although the proposed D.C. budget for the new fiscal year allocates funds for recruiting and bonuses for new police hires, the force is currently losing between 30 and 35 officers a month, and spending on overtime due to officer attrition is costing the District over a million dollars a year. Greggory Pemberton, the chairman of the D.C. Police Union, which represents the 3,200 officers, detectives and sergeants of the MPD, testified before a congressional committee recently and...

Department of Transportation Denies Special Permit for LNG Project Buttigieg Urged to Stop Gibbstown Project for Good by Halting Trump-Era Rule WASHINGTON D.C. (April 24, 2023) — According to the Federal Register, the U.S. Department of Transportation has denied Energy Transfer Partners a special permit to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) by rail from Wyalusing, PA to Gibbstown, NJ. While this is a victory for halting the Gibbstown project, Energy Transfer Partners could still use a Trump-era rule to move forward with its project. The following is the reaction from Kimberly Ong, Senior Attorney at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council): "The future of the Gibbstown liquefied natural gas terminal is looking bleaker by the day. The denial of the Energy Transfer Partners special permit is a huge victory for halting this planet-warming, water-polluting, community-endangering fossil fuel project. Now the DOT just needs to put the nail in the coffin and...
