100's of Medical Residents at Penn Medicine Move to Unionize

By Lauren Jessop | The Center Square contributor (The Center Square) – Hundreds of medical residents at the University of Pennsylvania Health System may become the first group of its kind in the state to unionize as their demands for higher pay and better working conditions have gone ignored. Unionization efforts sparked nationwide after the pandemic pushed long working hours from routine to unsustainable. As such, the residents at Penn Medicine’s main campus in West Philadelphia decided to add their name to the growing list of those seeking representation. A supermajority of the 1,400-plus resident and fellow physicians employed by the heath system has demanded voluntary recognition of their union with the Committee of Interns and Residents, the largest house staff union in the country. A press release issued by CIR said resident-led organizing began early in the pandemic when they were denied their regular cost of living increase. After a months-long struggle with hospital management – over what they say are urgently needed improvements to working conditions and patient care – they began pursuing unionization. Although Penn Medicine hospitals are among the nation’s top medical centers, residents say low pay, rising costs of living, “and a national culture of... Read more →

Railroad's Secretive Decisions after Derailment Hinder Response

Train Derailment and a massive fire, in East Palestine Ohio. Image courtesy of CBSnews.com/ Pittsburgh News https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/ (The Center Square) (February 24, 2023)--– In responding to the East Palestine train derailment in Ohio, Pennsylvania officials said Norfolk Southern's cagey behavior undermined the state's emergency response. During a public hearing on Thursday, Randy Padfield, leader of the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, walked the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee through events leading up to the release of vinyl chloride from a handful of derailed cars. The same events – as The Center Square previously reported – drew rebuke from Gov. Josh Shapiro, who accused Norfolk Southern of prioritizing speed over safety and ignoring emergency response best practices. In a letter issued earlier this month, Shapiro promised to hold the railroad accountable for any and all impacts – environmental, health and economic – that come as a result of the accident. State and local officials echoed the same sentiment during Thursday's hearing. “We ask the rail company — Norfolk Southern had their individuals there — say ‘what other alternative plans have you thought through?’” Padfield said. “At that point in time, we were told by Norfolk Southern, they are the experts,... State Attorneys General to Biden on “Assault Weapon” Ban: Nope, Nada, Not Having It

SUPPORT NRA-ILA Following his State of the Union (SOTU) speech earlier this month, in which President Joe Biden yelled, “Band [sic] ‘assault weapons’ now!”, the president predictably included the same demand last week in remarks at the National Association of Counties legislative conference. “I’m gonna say something that’s always controversial but there is no rationale for assault weapons and magazines that hold 50, 70 bullets. Got it done once. Gonna do it again.” A day later, sixteen state Attorneys General, led by Austin Knudsen, the Montana Attorney General, penned a blunt letter to the president in response to his “unconstitutional and irresponsible demand that Congress ban firearms commonly used by law-abiding Americans for self-defense.” The five-page document meticulously dismantles Biden’s rhetoric on “assault weapons” and schools the president on how astonishingly wrong he is in proclaiming that “[t]he idea we still allow semiautomatic weapons to be purchased is sick …It has no, no social redeeming value.” Americans own approximately 100 million semiautomatic handguns and 45 million semiautomatic rifles. The “staggeringly broad” definition of “assault weapon” personally employed by Joe Biden would include every semi-automatic firearm. “Thus, when Americans hear that you plan to come after our so-called ‘assault weapons,’ we... THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY: NJ Ten biggest Tax Deadbeats

Dorothy Philbin | CNBNews Columnist In New Jersey people of almost every profession have to have a required number of educational hours, pass a test, and then pay a small fortune for a license to practice the trade. Some of these trades are hair stylist, manicurist, plumber, electrician, and all others but one. That trade is home improvement. If there is a storm, you will see home improvement companies come out of the woodwork. The first thing you should look for is the license plate and any decals on the vehicles. If they are not in-state license plates and local decals - don't answer the door. Public adjusters also come out of the woodwork. Adjusters, though regulated, negotiate on your behalf with the insurance company to get you a higher settlement. Your brother-in-law most likely can do the same and won't take 25% of the settlement. The reason for so much attention to home improvement companies is that eight out of 10 of the NJ Deadbeats are home improvement companies. The best of the worst deadbeats are Daryl Turner and his wife, Robyn Bernstein of Marlton, NJ. They own a travel agency which is regulated. They owe $10,529,527. Turner was... Read more →

Consumer Alert: Top Scams of 2022

By Andrew Rayo Consumer Education Specialist February 23, 2023 What are scammers up to these days? Every day, people just like you tell the FTC what they’ve spotted, and maybe even lost money to. Then, every year, the FTC rolls up all those millions of reports about fraud, scams, and bad business practices to tell the story: what ARE scammers up to these days? The 2022 headline is this: scammers took a LOT of money. The latest FTC data book says people reported losing $8.8 billion to scams. That’s $2.6 billion more than 2021. Except the number of reports are down by half a million (2022: 2.4 million reports. 2021: 2.9 million reports). Here are some highlights from 2022: Investment scams were huge, with reported losses of $3.8 billion. That’s more than people lost to any other scam, and more than double the loss reported in 2021. Impersonator scams were still the most-reported scam, with reported losses of $2.6 billion. The difference this year? Higher losses to business imposters: 2022 losses were $660 million, compared to $453 million in 2021. If people paid a scammer, the biggest reported losses were through bank transfers ($1.5 billion reported lost to scams) and... Read more →
