Dimear Caraballo, 26, Charged with Shooting Camden City Man

Camden City, N.J.- A Camden City man has been arrested and charged for the fatal shooting of a man on Monday, January 23, 2023, reported Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Camden County Police Chief Gabriel Rodriguez.

Homicide investigation

On Monday, January 23, 2023, the Camden County Police Department received a ShotSpotter activation for gunfire at 8:21 a.m. in the area of the 1100 block of Lansdowne Avenue in Camden City, New Jersey. Responding officers arrived at the scene and located a male victim, suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was identified as Mustapha Gbassa, 35, of Camden. Gbassa was transported to Virtua Hospital, and he was pronounced deceased at 8:31 a.m.

Following an investigation by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Camden County Police Department, Dimear Caraballo, 26, was arrested on January 24, 2023, by the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force and charged for the fatal shooting of Gbassa.

Caraballo is charged with the following offenses:

  1. One Count of 1st degree Murder
  2. One count of 2nd degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose
  3. One count of 2nd degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon

Following his arrest, Caraballo was remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility.  All individuals charged with crimes are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
