By Don Feder Whatever unites us, the left is against This article originally appeared on December 18, 2022 in the Washington Times image courtesy of https://tenor.com The left hates Christmas because it hates all expressions of faith in our society. On a deeper level, however, the War on Christmas is a war on America. In many ways, Christmas is as much an American holiday as a Christian holiday. (No trees or tinsel in Bethlehem.) Today, only 63% of Americans call themselves Christians, while 93% celebrate Christmas. In other words, almost a third of those who celebrate Christmas are non-Christians. More than Thanksgiving, Memorial Day or the Fourth of July, Christmas unites us as a people. Anything that brings Americans together, the left fears like the flag, the national anthem and statues of our heroes. This is reflected in the push to get Christmas trees out of public parks and libraries...

by Dorothy Philbin | CNBNews Columnist One person any manager does not want to meet is someone who knows just enough about accounting and finance to realize that something in the business statements just doesn't feel right. The first thing a person needs to understand is that a budget is a "best guess" of what money a city, company, or even individual will receive and how much will be spent. A budget is not cast in concrete, but it needs to make sense and be written in a language that most people, not just CPAs, understand. Every year West Deptford Township publishes a "User-Friendly Budget" which makes for interesting reading. Gloucester City supposedly also publishes a "User-Friendly Budget" but it just isn't as easy to find. Toward the end of West Deptford's budget is a page where they explain the money they plan to receive from other municipalities and the...

Last week, Leo Holt gave a unique Christmas gift to the Gloucester City public school district. This particular gift may save a student's life someday. Holt, the president of Holt Logistics, operates one of the largest maritime businesses on the Delaware River, headquartered in the former U.S. Coast Guard Base, King and Cumberland Streets. The gift, 250 portable steel shields, propel bullets, which will help protect students and staff if a shooter enters the school. This season, the Philadelphia Eagles have been on a charge. They currently have the best record in the entire NFL, racking up 12 victories and just one defeat. As such, they are currently the top seeds in the entire country, and with the postseason playoffs just a couple of weeks away, another memorable season in Pennsylvania could be on the cards. Much of their success this term must be given to starting quarterback Jalen Hurts. The 24-year-old former University of Oklahoma standout has been in scintillating form this term, throwing for over 3,000 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also leads the league in terms of QB rushing stats, picking up almost 700 yards and 110 touchdowns. It’s no surprise that football bets on Bovada made Hurts and co. one of the favorites to lift the Lombardi Trophy this season. They do have some stiff competition, primarily from the AFC’s Buffalo...

by Dorothy Philbin | CNBNews columnist The people in Harrison Township stopped the building of a 2.1 million square foot warehouse by showing up at the township planning/zoning board meetings. According to many of those interviewed, the problem was that although it was a three-year project, they didn't know about the warehouse until they heard about it from neighbors. The township, they said, did nothing proactive to inform the taxpayers. That is probably true, at least half-true. The state rules governing what and how taxpayers have to be informed of planning and zoning issues were written 75 years ago! There was no internet 75 years ago and computers were in their infancy. Companies were in the process of switching from manual to electric typewriters. These rules need to be updated - desperately. So far as Gloucester City is concerned, no doubt the city meets the 75-year-old requirements but that doesn't...

Public employee pension systems are some of the largest financial liabilities on state government balance sheets. The 50 states have over $4.5 trillion in cumulative pension liabilities combined, roughly double the amount all 50 states spent in fiscal 2020. For years, state pension systems were woefully underfunded in much of the country, but according to a recent report from the Pew Charitable Trusts, this trend may be reversing. CNBNews graphic file Driven by higher employee and employer investment, state pension systems have largely stabilized as of 2020. Since 2007, states across the country have more than doubled annual pension contributions, often cutting funding for other programs to do so. Still, some states are better positioned to pay public sector employees in retirement than others. In New Jersey, pension liabilities totaled an estimated $208.2 billion in 2020. Meanwhile, the state's pension assets totaled $79.9 billion. Considering both assets and liabilities, New...

The New Jersey Senate plans to take a final vote on Monday on legislation that attacks concealed carry and completes weeks of scheming to do an end-run of this summer’s Bruen decision. This brazen act of defiance is almost certain to initiate more litigation, as these lawmakers remain undeterred when it comes to advancing their own political agendas, even if that means ignoring the rule of law and their sworn oaths to defend the Constitution. The Assembly has already passed the companion bill to S.3214. A.4769/S.3214 arbitrarily and drastically expands the number of places labeled as “sensitive places” where concealed carry is prohibited. In addition, the bill: Drastically increases the cost of obtaining permits and credentials. Expands the already-rigorous New Jersey training requirements. Uses social media and online posts as grounds to deny permits. It requires gun owners to acquire insurance, even though it is unknown whether this type of...

Ysbrand Cosijn / Shutterstock.com (The Center Square) – Pennsylvania’s recent shift of deer season’s start date wasn’t universally loved, but the deer harvest has continued to grow since 2015. The Pennsylvania Game Commission upset a number of hunters in 2019 when it voted to move the start of deer season to the Saturday after Thanksgiving, rather than the Monday after Thanksgiving. Hunters have adjusted, however. About 435,000 deer were harvested in the 2020-21 season, compared to 375,000 in 2018-29 and 316,000 in 2015-16, according to the PGC’s 2021 annual report. “By moving the opening day to Saturday, a weekend day when fewer people are working or going to school and more people have off, hunting on the opening day became a reality for hunters who otherwise would have been shut out,” said PGC Spokesman Travis Lau. A survey conducted on behalf of the PGC of hunters in December 2021, found...
