Peyton and Me Meandering:

Great GHS Idea; Gcity Thai Boxing; O'Hara's Penthouse; Meat/Fish Prices; School Lawsuit Settled; Olive & Mabel

THE GHS SENIOR PARKING SPOT...What a great idea.-- On a recent walk, we noticed some of the parking spots at Gloucester High School (GHS) were painted with different designs. Wanting to know more, we contacted School Superintendent Sean Gorman. "The new Senior parking spot tradition that we started has been wonderful. Seniors are assigned a parking spot in our lot. They worked with our Senior Class Advisor and Art Department Chair to personalize their design for their spot and completed the work themselves. Current Board of Education member Jackie Borger mentioned that she had heard of another local school district that allowed their Seniors to do this and thought it would be a marvelous tradition to begin here. We were able to connect with the other local school district, and our Maintenance Department helped support us in bringing this new tradition to GHS," said Gorman.

CNB NOTE: There are about 30 senior parking spots. Because of space, we can only show a few randomly chosen ones.

OH'HARA'S PENTHOUSE VIEW-Why in the world would someone build this shack on the roof of the abandoned OH'Hara's Tavern at 22 N. King Street? And why hasn't it been removed? It looks like a strong wind could blow it off the three-story building at any time. In recent years pigeons, rats, and termites have taken over the abandoned building. Some windows are wide open, and others have been boarded up. The photos were taken from the back of the property on North Willow Street.

At the August Planning Board meeting, Visa Real Estate LLC – 22 N King Street appeared for an Informal/Concept Review of the former tavern. Presenting the plans were  Shawn McGown, attorney, Tom Vissago, principal of Visa Real Estate LLC, and Aydan Kalkan, architect.

The first floor would be for commercial use, and eight-unit apartments would be built on the second and third floors. They are proposing 15 spaces parking lot for the retail business and the apartments in the backyard of the property. The business will not be a large venue. Tom Vissago will be the property manager for leasing the apartments and business spaces.

Two efficiency apartments and two one-bedrooms are proposed under 450sf for the second and third floors. They will need a use variance for the proposed mixed-use business and apartments in the CRO zone. William Ackley provided testimony on the property's structure, and the municipal parking lots around the property provide enough parking. The meeting notes said it follows the existing properties along that block and the redevelopment zone for the area.

YOU CAN THANK THE WASHINGTON ELITE!--We stopped at one of our favorite markets in Cherry Hill recently and couldn't believe how much inflation has caused meat and fish prices to rise.

Veal Rib Chop, $21.99 lb.; Dry Aged Prime Strip Steak, $34.99 lb.; Bone-in Rib Roast, $13.99 lb.; Strip Steak, $79.99 lb.

Fish were being sold in the following case, so we moved over to check those prices. Not much better there.

Yellowfin Tuna Steaks, $27.99 lb.; Chilean SeaBass filets, $44.99 lb.; Rainbow Trout filets, $14.99 lb.; Flounder filets, $19.99 lb.; and Arctic Char, $17.99 lb.

We left the market with more hotdogs and hamburgers than we usually buy.

COLD SPRINGS SCHOOL COMPLEX--The long-awaited drainage system for the solar panels installed in 2018 at the Cold Springs School, the Gloucester City Middle School, and the Gloucester City High School is finally being erected. In March 2021, the Gloucester City Board of Education, on behalf of the taxpayers, filed a lawsuit against the builder for not completing the job per specifications. (See article here)

VIDEO FOR YOUR AMUSEMENT, OLIVE AND MABEL

Some may wonder why we love our labs so much. One reason, as shown in this video, is that they each have a distinct personality that brings a smile to your face daily.

Peyton is the eighth labrador that we have owned. She will be nine in February. Sadly Labradors have a lifespan of only 10 to 11 years. Nikki was the oldest lab we ever owned. She died when she was 15. When we got Peyton, we had thought she would outlive us, but time will tell.
