Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on Christmas movies that would be good to avoid: Most Christmas movies are endearing, if somewhat simple, but hardly a year goes by without some studio offering some really slimy fare. This year is no exception. CNBNews graphic file Playing off of “Silent Night,” Universal Pictures is bringing out “Violent Night” on December 2. The plot involves Santa Claus seeking to rescue a family from mercenaries. Santa is anything but gentle—he is a master of violence. According to one reviewer, the movie contains “constant harsh but bloodless violence, including gunplay, explosions, and torture, some sexual humor, a few uses of profanity...and crass language.” The movie’s director, Tommy Wirkola, previously directed “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” a 2013 film which was slammed for its “pervasive gory violence.” Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the script writers, have a history of dealing with violence and Christmas. They...

November 29, 2022 Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on Disney’s latest box office failure: The most common word used by reviewers of Disney’s new film, “Strange World,” was “bombs.” Disney expected to bring in $30 to $40 million over Thanksgiving weekend but netted only $18.6 million. That’s pretty bad considering it cost $180 million to make the flick. It is expected to cost Disney $100 million when the final numbers are posted. The Wrap called it “one of Disney’s biggest failures ever,” saying it was the “biggest animated bomb in 20 years.” What happened? Those who live inside the Hollywood bubble can’t figure it out. But parents can. “Strange World” was the first animated movie for children featuring a gay teen romance. That’s not what most parents want their kids to see: they don’t want to sexualize their children. Disney was founded as a family-friendly organization. In more recent...

TRENTON, New Jersey (Nov. 29, 2022) ─ Today, a coalition of state and national animal protection groups, including the Animal Protection League of New Jersey, the Humane Society of the United States, and Friends of Animals, launched an emergency court challenge to the black bear trophy hunt that is scheduled to begin Dec. 5. The hunt was authorized by the New Jersey Fish and Game Council earlier this month. Hunt clubs nominate six of the Council’s eleven members. The animal groups are challenging the Council’s misuse of an emergency rulemaking loophole to bypass required procedures that guarantee the public the right to weigh in and require the Council to respond to said public comments. Despite having ample time to comply with these procedures, the Council forced through a last-minute emergency rule, leaving the public no time to respond. The lawsuit seeks emergency relief stopping the Dec. 5 hunt. The hunt...

For much of the world, there’s been a progressive nature to the legalization, regulation and production of cannabis, with many countries around the world have changed their stance to be more liberal when it comes to the consumption of the drug. However, reports coming out of the UK are bucking that trend, with senior figures in the government and police pushing forward recommendations that cannabis shouldn’t be legalized, but actually bumped up to a Class A drug. It comes at an interesting time for the nation and other addictive substances within society. With more people overdosing on opioids than ever before, whilst addiction counselling is becoming more common than ever before, many people are suggesting that the priorities of the government aren’t quite where they should be, and more focus should be given to these problem areas. Meanwhile, there are no recorded deaths of cannabis overdose worldwide. Compare that to...
