Sunday, October 23, 2022
GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ --Gloucester Catholic is pleased to announce the Catherine M. Flynn Scholarship, which helps to fund the education of a Gloucester Catholic student throughout her high school career (see below). The Catherine M. Flynn Scholarship was funded recently by Thomas F. Flynn III, Class of 1965, on behalf of his grandmother, Catherine M. Flynn.
Mrs. Flynn (see photo below) was a highly recognized civic and politically active leader in Gloucester City prior to her passing in 1986 at 92. She was recognized for leaving an impressive record of community service and long hours spent throughout her lifetime for the betterment of her church, her community, and her neighbors. In 1972, she was named Gloucester City Jaycees Citizen of the Year while being selected Citizen of the Year by the Gloucester City Rotary and Lions Club in 1977 at age 82. Mrs. Flynn was also very active in the Democratic Party and served as an appointed member of several local and county public boards.
She emigrated with her husband, Thomas F. Flynn Sr., and son Thomas F. Flynn, Jr., to the United States from England in 1920 to escape religious discrimination against Irish Catholics. The family was based in Waterford, Ireland at the time, however, with the civil war ongoing in Ireland, they chose to come to the U.S.
"My grandmother was active within the community on so many levels, while also providing love and support for her family," said Mr. Flynn recently. "I am honored to support this scholarship in her memory on behalf of my family to a Gloucester Catholic student."
Gloucester Catholic is so grateful to have a committed alum like Thomas F. Flynn III, a highly successful businessman in Clearwater, FL, who is willing to give back to the school to allow a GC education to become a reality for so many of our families!
