On August 21, 500 young at heart grown-ups gathered for a day of unbridled fun in the sun that normally only kids get to experience at Liberty Lake. “Campers” enjoyed boating, fishing, Ga-Ga, mini-golf, archery-tag, basketball, pickleball, rock climbing, water tramp, water slides, and a whole lot more- including cold, craft beers from Screamin’ Hill Brewery in Cream Ridge, NJ. The number one question of the day- “When are we doing this again?”

The brainchild of Screamin’ Hill’s Gregg Marantz and Liberty Lake’s Kurtis Johnson, “Grown-Up Camp” provided a release from regular life that the participants truly appreciated. “After all that time at home, wishing we could go out, this is the kind of thing that we had to be at, letting loose with our friends” affirmed Tracy LaCava, who came with a crew of neighbors from New Egypt.

Grown-Up Campers enjoyed old-school games like egg-tossing and tug of war, and while the competition was fierce, it always stayed friendly. Marantz adds, “So many groups of people showed up with specially made tee-shirts and worked together as teams- it was really fun to be a part of, and even to watch! For a first-time event, it was bigger than expected- We even had to drive back to the brewery to bring back more kegs of beer!”

This summer has brough out big crowds consistently, says Johnson, noting that picnics at Liberty Lake have been hosting thousands of patrons, and the NJ Renaissance Faire sold out all four days in May/June. “But for Grown-Up Camp, I think that part of the allure is being able to leave the kids home, so that we parents get a chance to act like kids!” Susan Charney of Delran, whose children also attend Liberty Lake Day Camp couldn’t agree more, “Best. Day. Ever!” Screen Shot 2022-09-13 at 11.02.43

As Grown-Up Campers were leaving to their cars, owner Jill Pritikin was handing out ice-pops while saying, “Tell your kids that you had a great day at Camp today!” Stay tuned for Grown-Up Camp in 2023- Says Johnson, “Maybe in June, maybe in August- Maybe both!”

Liberty Lake has been a popular event and picnic site in Mansfield Township, NJ for over 50 years. The Day Camp is accredited by the American Camp Association Accredited Camp and provides an outdoor, tech-free experience, serving families in five New Jersey counties as well as Center City Philadelphia, and Lower Bucks.
