CNBNews OPINION: Why Should Gloucester City Taxpayers Have to Complain About an Obvious Safety Issue?

William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNewsnet

GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (July 20, 2022)(CNBNewsnet)--Since Gloucester City residents are paying some of the highest property taxes in  New Jersey; you would think those residents would at least have working street lights. But that is not the case in this small city of two and half square miles.

CNB EDITORIAL

We received several complaints recently about street lights being out on side streets and major highways in the City.  The people say they have reached out to Department Heads and received no satisfaction. They have also called PSE&G. Below are two of the complaints.

Two street lights are out in front of Gorman manor carpenter square senior citizen place. A woman was hit there a few weeks back. I asked the police (at the scene of accident )to please report the street lights that were out for months, I called Gloucester City public works and a very polite woman said that she would contact PSE&G for the one street light and that Gloucester City public works would fix the light directly in front of Dunkin’ Donuts. Still not fixed. Called today and you can’t even leave a message??I am concerned that there could be another accident or another person hit by a car.

Along Broadway their are multiple lights out also. It's really Dark at Market and Broadway intersection, by coffee corner and down. They have also been out for some time. It's Dangerous!

Residents shouldn't have to complain about an obvious safety issue. The police, firefighters, mayor, and council should see this apparent problem when riding around the city at night.

How about the Acting City Administrator? Where is he? Mr. Morrell's appointment was only temporary. That was 30 months ago. If the mayor and council can't find a full-time city administrator in 30 months, it may be time to replace them. You are paying the highest taxes in the state; you deserve a full-time administrator, not an acting one.

We suggest you copy the following note and send it to each governing body member. Or send your own. Get your neighbors to do the same.

Below are the names and email addresses of the mayor and council members.

Dear Mayor, and members of City Council,

I have noticed several streets lights in our city that are not working, specifically (name street). I am asking you to do something about this problem since the street is so dark without those lights. Because there is no street light (s) someone could be seriously injured at night by a motorists. Plus without the light my house is a easy target for thieves.

Sincerely……..

When you sign your name, include your address.

Dayl Baile
