By Bridget Small June 28, 2022 Scammers want payments that are quick, anonymous, and tough to reverse. In other words, scammers are asking for wire transfers. That’s why money transfer businesses like Walmart need to warn people about fraud risks and train employees to spot scams. And that’s why the FTC is suing Walmart in federal court. The FTC says Walmart has known for many years that scammers use its locations to get money for grandparent, romance, and other scams, but it didn’t properly warn people or train its employees to prevent fraud. According to the FTC, many Walmart locations didn’t display or give people information about potential fraud, which could have stopped them from sending money to a scammer. The company didn’t consistently post warning signs, put out fraud awareness brochures, or use the required money transfer “send” forms with front-page fraud warnings. For years, according to the FTC,...

By Casey Harper | The Center Square (The Center Square) – The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday overturned Maine’s ban on state tuition assistance to students attending religious schools in an education case that could have big implications for schools around the country. The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Carson v. Makin. The dispute began when the state of Maine created a tuition assistance program for rural areas without public schools. The program, though, explicitly said that state funds could not be used at religious private schools, only secular schools. A family sued the state of Maine saying they should be able to use the state funding at a religious school if they desired. They argued the program discriminates against religious schools and violates the Free Exercise Clause of the Constitution. The Supreme Court sided with the challengers to Maine’s law Tuesday. “Maine’s program cannot survive strict scrutiny,” the court’s...

The organization represents the trucking industry and industry-related companies doing business at the port. “One would think, 'Wow, that's fantastic because it's 30% more revenue and 30% more business coming into New Jersey,’” she said. “The problem is that it happened so quickly.” At the beginning of the pandemic, multiple vessel cancellations occurred because all of the manufacturing shut down overseas. “Not only did...

By Bob Pepalis | The Center Square contributor (The Center Square) – A Republican budget plan for New Jersey includes adjusting the state income tax for inflation, an idea that a research and educational organization has advocated for the past year. State Republican leaders planned to use the state’s huge surplus to send direct payments to consumers to offset high inflation, the New Jersey Monitor reports. They also want to make tax bracket adjustments to account for more than 20 years of inflation, increase state school aid, and stop the state from diverting municipal energy taxes away from its cities. “Since last year, GSI has been advocating for New Jersey to index our tax brackets to inflation, to avoid the stealth tax of bracket creep," said William J. CNBNews graphic file Brought to you by the 6-3 conservative Supreme Court, let’s dissect this cultural moment and how the perfect storm was created. First of all, Roe v. Wade was always on shaky ground. The very simple conclusion of why it was overturned through the Dobbs decision was that the original 1973 ruling was moot to start with. Friday the Supreme Court defied nearly a half-century of legal precedent by stripping Americans of one of their most fundamental freedoms: the right to decide what happens to their own body. U.S. Senator Booker Overturning Roe v. Wade will harm countless Americans, particularly those facing the most unthinkable of circumstances, such as in the case of rape, incest, or if someone’s life is put in danger by forcing them to carry a pregnancy to term.
