Rowan Wins First Round of NCAA Softball Regional Tournament

MEDFORD, MA -- #19 Rowan took down Cabrini, 8-1, in its NCAA Regional Tournament opener on Friday hosted by Tufts.

Morgan Zane went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI's while starter Emily August fanned six while allowing one run on six hits.

The Profs will move on to play the host Jumbos tomorrow at noon. Tufts defeated Muhlenberg, 4-1, in the day's first game. The Cavaliers and Mules will play in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m.

Rowan reached base with a season-high nine walks. Payton MacNair walked three times and which was a career best and scored twice. Liz McCaffery swiped two bases as well.

In the first, Zane singled home McKenzie Melvin for a 1-0 lead. After MacNair led off the third with a walk, Zane struck again, doubling down the left field line. Zane later scored on a bases loaded walk drawn by Devyn DiPasquale. In the same inning, a two-out error at short allowed two more runs to score to up the lead to 5-0.

Breanna Bryant worked a bases loaded walk in the fourth to plate MacNair.

The Cavaliers used back-to-back doubles in the fifth to cross their lone run. With runners now on first and second, the Profs ended the inning as Bryant snagged a sharp liner at third for the third out.

Cat Thomas added some more insurance in the sixth as she smacked a two-run home run to left. It was her second longball on the season.
