THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY:

What is Happening with Disney?

Is there ever a story behind the story when it comes to Disney it all started in 1967.  The story also includes other major theme parks in the Orlando, FL area.

In 1967 when Disney was buying thousands of acres of land in the Orlando area they made an Images-3"agreement" with the state of Florida that they could manage themselves.  "Manage" included zoning, planning, utilities, as well as governing themselves. If Disney wanted to build a nuclear power plant in the middle of the Magic Kingdom, they could do it and no one could do anything about it.  Again, this is not based on any law; it is based on an agreement. As time went on, the other theme parks got the same agreement.

Moving ahead to this week.  The state of Florida passed a law to protect children in preschool to grade 3.  The law only says that between those ages schools and teachers could not discuss or counsel sexual identity and/or preference with the students.  The law makers in Florida feel that if such topics need to be discussed at such an early age, the parents should do it.

People in favor of the law call it the "Parents' Rights in Education."  Those against the law call it the "Don't Say Gay" law even though the word gay never appears anywhere in the law.

Those of us who are old enough to remember the Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday nights remember Walt Disney introducing the show.  He wanted to build an amusement park for children which the parents could enjoy also.  All his work was for children.  In the early days his stories were cartoons but in the 1950s Walt gave us The Mickey Mouse Club with Spinn and Marty among other child-oriented shows.  To the Baby Boomer generation Disney meant everything good and wholesome.  That has changed, big time.

Already Disney's greeting has changed from "Hello ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls and children of all ages" to "Welcome Dreamers."  You see, using terms such boys and girls is deemed to be offensive.  To whom?  If you have children are they boys and/or girls or are they non-gender dreamers?

The current executives of the Disney Corporation are more interested in "causes" than children.  They are very much against the "Parents' Rights in Education" and have threatened to go to any length to stop it.  But how will they do that?  What will they get out of it?  Already people have cancelled their internet

subscriptions despite offers of reduced price or free services.  It doesn't sound like Disney is winning but for how long can they hold out?  How do they later say "Woops!  Changed our minds, there really are boys and girls."

Back in the 1960s the Chairman of the Board of General Motors, Alfred Sloan, once said "What's good for General Motors is good for America."  It seems that Disney has the same opinion, but look where General Motors is today.  Where will Disney be if or when their "agreement" is deemed void or overruled by law?  But the really big question is - what will Disney do with all the princes and princesses who made them famous and rich?
