Pandemic Spurs Kiwanis Service Program
HADDONFIELD: COVID-19 spurred new and meaningful community service projects resulting in statewide recognition for the Kiwanis Club of the Haddons.
“During 2021, we successfully pivoted our service program to increase community involvement with a combination of in-person socially distant projects and work-at-home service projects,” noted club immediate past president Harvey Lermack.
The Distinguished Club Award was bestowed upon the club at an April 2 ceremony of the New Jersey District of Kiwanis by 2020-21 NJ District Kiwanis Governor Joseph Giordano. Club President Janet Boris, a Boy Scout District Executive, achieved the Distinguished President Award and Club Secretary Milton Smith, an Architect with Kitchen and Associates, also achieved the Distinguished Secretary Award.
Criteria to earn the award included membership growth, documenting the long-term community service project of the Little Timber Creek Nature Trail in Haddon Heights, completing officer education, and sponsorship of Service Leadership Program clubs at Eastern Regional High School, Cherry Hill High School East, Haddonfield Memorial High School and Rosa Intermediate School.
Kirk Popiolek of Barrington was bestowed the Distinguished Lieutenant Governor Award, in part for shepherding membership growth across the six clubs in the Burlington-Camden-Gloucester-Cumberland County District. Popiolek is currently the Governor-elect for the NJ District of Kiwanis.
