TRENTON – Property taxes in New Jersey climbed by nearly 2% again last year, restrained by the cap but still amounting to a $583 million tax hike. The statewide tab now exceeds $31 billion. The tax bill on the average home unofficially rose to $9,266, according to a New Jersey 101.5 review of county abstracts of ratables and Department of Treasury home assessment data.

Looking at the property taxes for the 37 communities in Camden County, Gloucester City is listed in the top five with the highest percentage increase in taxes. A study released in March of 2021 showed that Gloucester City was one of 30 communities out of 564 municipalities with the highest taxes. The City also received that unwanted distinction in 2018.
Keep in mind that Gloucester City residents are so poor that the community qualifies as an ABBOTT DISTRICT, one of only 31 in the state. The residents are so poor it also qualifies to be an Urban Enterprise Zone, one of only 37 in the state.
