CONGRATULATIONS: Illustrator Frank McShane receives Jonathan Sharp Lifetime Achievement Award

PDE Bestows Award to New Jersey Illustrator

PHILADELPHIA — Partnership for the Delaware Estuary (PDE) celebrated 25 years of working to improve the health of the Delaware River and Bay on Oct. 7 with nearly 300 friends and supporters at Vie in Philadelphia. One of the highlights of the evening was the heartfelt recognition given to New Jersey illustrator Frank McShane. McShane, of Haddon Heights, New Jersey, received PDE’s Jonathan Sharp Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I want to thank PDE Executive Director Kathy Klein and all of the great people at PDE for working with me and teaching me so much about the environment we live in,” McShane said upon receiving the award. “PDE has been pivotal in my life, and it has been with me throughout my journey as an illustrator and designer. I truly appreciate their contributions to the Delaware Estuary, and to the environment, and I am proud to have worked with them over the past 25 years.”

McShane is the graphic illustrator behind PDE’s first and subsequent logos, as well as logos for the Schuylkill Action Networkand most of PDE’s significant graphics work, including its brochures, its Freshwater Mussels of the Delaware Estuary guide book, covers for the Delaware Estuary Science and Environmental Summit programs, and more. In addition to work for PDE, McShane has created graphic designs for many of PDE’s partners including Lycoming County Conservation District, Berks Nature, Pennsylvania Sea Grant, the Nanticoke Watershed Alliance, and America’s National Parks.  He also does work for Hershey, Johnson & Johnson, Campbell’s, Starbucks, and Butterball. An Audubon, New Jersey native, McShane graduated in 1988 from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

“I met Frank when he was an art student in Philadelphia in 1988,” Klein said. “Right away, I knew he had talent. When I joined PDE in 1996, I hired him to create PDE’s first logo, and he has been our go-to graphic illustrator ever since. From that first logo to other graphic designs, Frank had an artistic hand in PDE’s growth. His polished, professional design work made us look so good in the beginning that we were able to garner the attention of grantees, partners, and supporters. The logo helped PDE establish a brand to generate recognition in the region. The Jonathan Sharp award shows how much we appreciate just what he has done for PDE over all these years.”

McShane is the seventh person to receive the award since 2014. The Jonathan Sharp Lifetime Achievement award recognizes people for advancing science and management of the Delaware River Basin.  Those who receive it are considered by their peers to be respected leaders whose service yields major discoveries that address problems and bridge sectors.

The award’s namesake is Jonathan Sharpe, Ph.D., a professor emeritus at the University of Delaware whose research team published over 45 studies and reports on the Delaware River estuary.
