5 Alternatives To Renting A Car While Traveling

Renting a car is a useful means of getting around when you're traveling, but it's not the only option nor is it always the best option. Here are five alternatives to renting a car while traveling. Screen Shot 2021-10-20 at 16.39.04

1. Go On A Cruise

When you take cruises, cruise ships are your main mode of transportation. Your vacation or trip will take place entirely while traveling, like a road trip but on the water. Cruises tend to be all-inclusive, so there are plenty of activities to do onboard, but you'll also be given time to disembark at various locations whenever you take a cruise. It's not typically necessary to rent a car for the brief periods of time when you're on land during your cruise, so if you want to venture farther away from your ship, more flexible modes of transportation, such as rideshare apps, are better choices.

2. Use Rideshare Apps

Rideshare apps have been increasing in popularity over the past decade and are incredibly useful for both domestic and international travelers. The apps can be downloaded to your phone and used over mobile internet connections or wifi. All of the communication between drivers and passengers and payment transactions can be done within the app. Security features such as requiring drivers and passengers to provide identifying information and shareable maps and information passengers can send to their contacts assist in making rideshares safer. All of these features help make rideshares more accessible and familiar to travelers than other forms of transportation.

3. Use Public Transportation

Public transportation is an incredibly useful form of transportation, particularly in urban centers. Cars and places to park may be inaccessible or difficult to find in cities and traffic may be a deterrant to travelers for a variety of reasons. There is a variety of public transportation to choose from in most cities, most commonly buses and subways. Some cities offer tram lines and green alternatives such as rentable city bikes are increasingly popular in many states and countries. In many countries, public transportation is more reliable than cars, and it can be a good choice if you're uncomfortable with attempting to drive in a foreign country.

4. Book Flights

Flying is a great way to travel long distances in a relatively short amount of time. All major cities and many smaller cities have airports, so you're unlikely to be restricted by which locations are available for you to fly to. Flights may be more expensive or less expensive than renting a car, depending on where you plan to fly to, but even more expensive flights can have advantages over driving. For example, if you wanted to go to France, a car wouldn't be able to drive over the Atlantic, but a plan can fly over it in a matter of hours. There are also many budget airlines available for shorter trips. For example, you could fly from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh with a budget airline for a relatively low price in a fraction of the time it would take to drive between the two cities.

5. Take Trains

In many countries and in some parts of the United States, it's fairly easy to catch a train to travel long distances. If you've flown into a country or area and have a large suitcase, a train can provide almost as much room for your luggage as a car. It can also get you to your next destination even faster than a car can, while also allowing you and any traveling companions you have to relax and take a break. If you were to drive a car to your next destination, someone would have to drive or you would need to figure out a driving schedule.

There are times where renting a car is the best option available for transportation when you're traveling. However, some people may not feel comfortable or financially capable of renting a car. Others may feel that renting a car wouldn't be helpful in the course of their travels.
