Work on temporary Browning Road Bridge, Bellmawr Continues, Schedule Listed for Next 2 Weeks

Daytime and overnight closures necessary to complete temporary bridge

 

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today are reminding motorists of daytime and overnight lane closures on I-295 and Route 42 this week and next to continue work on the temporary Browning Road Bridge as part of the Direct Connect project in Bellmawr, Camden County. The overnight closures scheduled for next week may change depending on the progress made each night. NJDOT will provide updates if the lane closure schedule changes.

Wednesday, September 8 to Thursday, September 9 Daytime Closures

From 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Wednesday, September 8 and Thursday, September 9, NJDOT’s contractor, South State, Inc., is scheduled to close the I-295 northbound Exit 26 to I-76 westbound and the left lane on Route 42 in both directions. The closures are necessary to access the center pier of the temporary bridge for bearing work. The following detour will be in place:

I-295 northbound Exit 26 to I-76 westbound detour:

  • Motorists traveling on I-295 northbound wishing to take Exit 26 for I-76 westbound will be directed tocontinue on I-295 north to Exit 27
  • Take the left Exit 27 ramp to I-76 westbound

Monday, September 13 Overnight Closure

From 9 p.m. Monday, September 13 until 6 a.m. Tuesday, September 14, the right lane on I-295 northbound is scheduled to be closed. In addition, the Route 42 northbound Exit 1B to I-295 northbound is scheduled to be closed from 10 p.m. Monday, September 13 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, September 14. There also will be temporary traffic slowdowns on I-295 northbound and Route 42 northbound during that time. The closures and slowdowns are necessary to work on the temporary bridge deck. The following detour will be in place:

Route 42 north Exit 1B ramp to I-295 north detour:

The right lane on Route 42 northbound is scheduled to be closed just past Exit 14/Leaf Avenue, and Exit 1B to I-295 northbound is scheduled to be closed. The following detour will be in place:

  • Motorists traveling on Route 42 northbound wishing to take Exit 1B to I-295 northbound will be directed to continue on Route 42 northbound to I-76 westbound
  • Take I-76 westbound to Exit 2/I-676 northbound
  • Take I-676 northbound to Exit 1/Collings Avenue
  • Turn right onto Collings Avenue
  • Turn left onto I-676 southbound which becomes I-76 eastbound
  • Take I-76 eastbound to Exit 1B/I-295 northbound

Tuesday, September 14 Overnight Closure

From 9 p.m. Tuesday, September 14 until 6 a.m. Wednesday, September 15, the I-295 northbound Exit 26 ramp to I-76 eastbound is scheduled to be closed in conjunction with a left lane closure on Route 42 northbound.  In addition, there will be temporary traffic slowdowns on Route 42 northbound. The following detour will be in place:

I-295 northbound Exit 26 to I-76 westbound detour:

 

  • Motorists traveling on I-295 northbound wishing to take Exit 26 for I-76 westbound will be directed tocontinue on I-295 north to Exit 27
  • Take the left Exit 27 ramp to I-76 westbound

Wednesday, September 15 to Friday, September 17 Overnight Closures

From 9 p.m. Wednesday, September 15 and Thursday, September 16 until 6 a.m. the next day, the two left lanes on I-76 eastbound are scheduled to be closed. In addition, on Wednesday and Thursday nights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next day, the I-295 southbound ramp to Route 42 southbound/I-295 southbound, also known as Al-Jo’s Curve, is scheduled to be closed and detoured.

On Friday, September 17, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday, September 18, the I-295 southbound ramp to Route 42 southbound/I-295 southbound, also known as Al-Jo's Curve, and the left two lanes on I-76 eastbound are scheduled to be closed. The following detours will be in place each night:

 

I-295 southbound to Route 42 southbound/I-295 southbound detour:

  • Motorists traveling on I-295 southbound to Route 42 southbound will be directed to exit left at Exit 26/I-76 westbound
  • Take I-76 westbound to Exit 2/I-676 northbound
  • Take I-676 northbound to Exit 1/Collings Avenue
  • Turn right onto Collings Avenue
  • Turn left onto I-676 southbound which becomes I-76 eastbound
  • Take I-76 eastbound to Exit 1A/I-295 southbound

The overnight closures scheduled for Tuesday, September 14 to Friday, September 17 may change depending on the progress made each night. NJDOT will provide updates if the schedule changes.

Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
