Chinese automobile manufacturer BYD has launched a new generation of its 8Y-battery electric yard trucks. The company’s first delivery will include 14 second-generation electric yard trucks to two facilities operated by BNSF Railway in Southern California, where a demonstration project began with six of BYD’s first-generation electric yard trucks in 2018. The demonstration project is primarily funded through a $9.1-million grant from the California Air Resources Board to the San Bernardino County Council of Governments (SBCOG).

NEWARK, NJ--The NJDEP held a news conference at the Red Hook Container Terminals at Port Newark to showcase the deployment of ten new zero-emission battery-electric yard tractors. The DEP funded the project through proceeds from the Volkswagen emissions-cheating settlement.

The biggest source of air pollution and greenhouse gases in our state comes from automobiles, so it is critical to move quickly to electrify our transit system including buses, rails, electric heavy-duty garbage trucks, school buses, and port-related vehicles.

“This is a good first step as the NJ government grows their electric vehicle fleet, but we need to do more. We are in survival mode right now, and with the numerous wildfires in California and other locations around the world it has been reported that we just got another boost in Climatic Changes.  We need to be proactive. We need to act now to reduce all fossil fuel and greenhouse gas emissions,” said Renée Pollard, Environmental & Social Justice Chair, Sierra Club New Jersey.
