Stratford Hospital Emergency Department Receives 2020 DAISY Team Award for Extraordinary Care

Emergency Department (ED) staff at Jefferson Stratford Hospital were recently honored with the 2020 DAISY Team Award for providing extraordinary, compassionate and skillful care amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patient Care Services Coordinators Tracy Coleman, MSN, RN, and Steven Grille, RN, BS, CEN, nominated their colleagues for going “above and beyond” to collaborate and determine an immediate care plan during a recent high-acuity, high-census evening around change-of-shift. At the same time, a patient underwent cardiac arrest, another was unresponsive and required intubation, and a third needed respiratory support and Narcan, among other ED patients who required care.

“This situation does not present itself often, but the interdisciplinary team — led by Charge Nurse Janine Rodriguez, BSN, RN — banded together. They broke up into smaller teams and provided immediate, life-saving care to patients,” Coleman said. “The activity in the rest of the ED continued to function, including providing quality patient care and patient flow while maintaining a safe patient environment.”

Most of the team was comprised of newer-to-practice nurses, along with physicians, technicians and respiratory therapists. “We are happy to recognize them for their cohesiveness and diligence on a uniquely stressful night,” Grille said.

“I'm always amazed by this team. I always call them the ‘little engine that could,’” said Diane Juliano, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, Corporate Director of Nursing at Jefferson Stratford Hospital. “No matter the challenge put in front of them, somehow and someway, they get it done.”

Part of an international program, DAISY honorees are nominated by patients, family members, and colleagues for demonstrating excellence through clinical expertise, extraordinary compassionate care, and a high level of professionalism.

The DAISY Team Award honors collaboration among two or more nurse-led associates who meet family or patient needs by going “above and beyond” the traditional role of nursing. Jefferson’s Clinical Recognition Committee in New Jersey chooses winners following a review of nominations.

The nonprofit DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died in 1999 from complications of an auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique way of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patients’ families.
