ISM's Brown Bag FILM Club: May 2021
Tuesday, May 25
12:00PM - 1:00PM
As part of the Centennial Anniversary of the Unknown Soldier's difficult journey home aboard Cruiser Olympia, we are examining various journeys home and exploring what "home" means to individuals throughout the year.
In May, we will be joined by Opera Philadelphia and Johnathan McCullough to discuss their new film Soldier Songs, available on the Opera Philadelphia Channel. Based on interviews with veterans of five wars, the piece examines the impact of trauma, the exploitation of innocence, and the difficulty of expressing war's painful truths.
Join us as McCullough, the director and star of the film, reflects on the making of Soldier Songs and how he hopes it can shed light on the veterans' community today. The event will also feature behind-the-scenes footage from the filming, which took place in Chester County, Pennsylvania, by the site of the American Revolution's Battle of Brandywine in 1777.
We will also be joined by artist and former US Marine and Iraq war veteran Jeff Key, from Warrior Writers. Warrior Writers is a non-profit with the mission to create a culture that articulates veterans' experiences, builds a collaborative community for artistic expression, and bears witness to war and the full range of military experiences. They are a community of veterans, service members, artists, allies, and healers dedicated to creativity and wellness.
While viewing the film isn't necessary for participation, we highly encourage you to rent the film to help facilitate the discussion. Rent the film by CLICKING HERE.
