Traffic alert 1

Daytime closures necessary to continue excavation work

(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the right lane on I-295 northbound will be closed today and Saturday during the day to continue work on the retaining wall investigation in Bellmawr, Camden County.

Beginning at 9 a.m. today, Friday, April 30 until 4 p.m., and again on Saturday, May 1, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.,the right lane on I-295 northbound will be closed beginning just past the Creek Road overpass before Exit 26 where the highway splits for I-76 toward Philadelphia/I-295 toward Trenton and will continue through the tunnel. The closure is necessary for continued excavation work on the retaining wall that partially collapsed in March. Future lane closures may be necessary as the investigation continues. Motorists should expect congestion on I-295 northbound and Route 42 northbound.

The wall was built as part of the new roadway on the Direct Connection project that was not yet open to traffic. The removal of the panels from the damaged portion of the wall is complete. Excavation work is continuing to examine the soil below the wall, which is being done in stages and is expected to take a few weeks.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.  Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
