Widener Education Students Open Little Free Library in Chester
CHESTER, PA (02/08/2021)-- Widener University Center for Education students have created a mini library to provide Chester residents with easy, free access to new books. The Little Free Library - erected on the corner of Melrose Ave. and E. 17th St. - officially opened on Saturday, Jan. 23.
The students included:
Megan Branin, an early childhood and special education major from Millville, NJ (08332)
Shelby Schoffstall, an early childhood and special education major from Mullica Hill, NJ (08062)
The nine students started the Little Free Library as part of the service-learning component of Widener's Community Engaged Teacher Education, a program which prepares future teachers to thrive in diverse urban school settings. The students raised $1,000 and purchased a Little Free Library, as well as new and culturally diverse books to stock it.
"We chose this project because not everyone has books at home or in their area, and children often rely on their school library and resources. However, due to COVID-19, students lost access to their school library making it even harder to access books," said senior early childhood and special education major Shelby Schoffstall. "Knowing this, my team and I wanted to create an accessible library for children and adults of Chester to check out high-quality books at any time."
The Widener students hope the Little Free Library will allow residents of all ages to choose from a wide range of readings whenever they please. The Little Free Library is a global book sharing movement that builds community, inspires readers, and expands book access.
