Gloucester City Board of Education Accepts Resignation of School Superintendent Vespe

Brooklawn School District 2021-22 Student Tuition for GHS Totals $1,201,919

(GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ)(Feb. 12, 2021)--The Gloucester City Board of Education, at the February 9 meeting, accepted the resignation of Superintendent Dennis Vespe effective June 21. Vespe was hired for the school years 2017 through 2021.  His starting salary was $157,500.   According to the NJ Public Employees Data Base Vespe's salary, as of December 19, 2020, was $162,254.

He replaced Joseph Rafferty who retired on August 31, 2017. Rafferty was hired in 2012 at a salary of $146,000 plus benefits.  He replaced Paul Spaventa who was receiving a salary of  $162,000 at the time. Shortly thereafter Rafferty's salary was increased to $151,898.

At the same meeting the Board of Education certified that as of January 2021, to the best of the Boards’ knowledge, no major account or fund has been over-expended in violation of N.J.A.C. 6A:23-2.12-( a) 1 and that sufficient funds are available to meet the district’s financial obligations for the remainder of the school year.

The Board approved the payment of bills which totaled $4,307,244 of that amount $2,354,449 was for monthly payroll. 

Some of the Action items okayed by the Board included: 

Accepted a grant in the amount of $600 from Wells Fargo Cold Springs School Student Activity Principal Fund.

Approved Lease Agreement Contract between Gloucester County Vocational-Technical School District and Gloucester City Board of Education for use of swimming pool for high school swimming practices.

Approved the purchase of Dell Computers pursuant to State Contract #M0483 in the amount of $38,719.35. 

Approved Tuition Contract for Regular and Special Education Brooklawn students 2021-2022 school year which totals $1,201,919 for that period. A breakdown of that amount reveals there are 65 students from Brooklawn expected to attend GHS for that period at a rate of $17,227 for each. The estimated cost for Resource Room students is $82,164.

Approved Track and Field Project Change Orders - Landtek Change Order #1 in the amount of $11,629.95 for soil and seeding and Change Order #2 in the amount of $5,040.51 for a vapor barrier which will be deducted from the $40,000 contingency. The remaining balance in the contingency is $23,329.54.

Awarded the bid in the amount of $574,800 including alternate to Guadelli Brothers, Inc. for the Fan Coil Replacement project Base bid of $472,00 includes $50,000 contingency, plus alternate 1 $48,400 and Alternate 2, $54,400. Bids were opened on February 4, 2021.

A state police request for the use of the Mary Ethel Costello School for training purposes from March 22 to March 26 was approved. The Gloucester Catholic Track Team was given permission to use the athletic field at the Gloucester City Middle School from April 1 to June 15 weekdays only after 6PM.
