Cars from the 1950s and Early 1960s with the Added Continental Kit

(CNB News)(January 25, 2021)--Back in the day when you could tell the make of a car just by looking at it, there was a period when the so-called Continental kit accessory became a customizing aftermarket appearance that gave the vehicles that distinct flair. This external spare wheel mount was seen during the 1950s and early 1960s.

It enhanced the “long and low” look that was so popular at the time.  Continental kits and Imperial trunk bumps made a brief reappearance in the 1980s “pimpmobiles,” along with faux Rolls Royce Grilles, chrome wire wheels, and padded fabric top treatments.  Contemporary examples of Continental kits are sometimes found on customized automobiles or fully-accessorized restorations from that era. It has become an iconic, retro accessory that typifies the style of the mid-1950s.
