Peacefully, on January 15, 2021. Mother of 6 children and former nurse of Bellmawr, NJ. More recently of Mt. Laurel and Cherry Hill and a long-time resident of Sea Isle City. Loving and devoted wife of over 60 years to the late James J Ryan Sr. Beloved mother of Richard, Kathleen Pacifico, James Jr. (Sara), David (Stacey), Jennifer Alleva (David) and Daniel (Christie). Cherished "Mom-Mom" to 17 grandchildren and the late Jaime DeMaria, and 15 great grandchildren. Dear sister to the late Barbara Dubiel (Joseph). Treasured aunt and devoted friend to many.
Born in Philadelphia on August 23, 1929, Gwen grew up in Reading, PA. She was a proud cheerleader for Reading High School and was a 1950 graduate of the Bellevue School of Nursing in New York City. While excelling as an operating room nurse at Jefferson in Philadelphia, Gwen married husband Jim in 1952. Together they founded Red Lion Insulation in 1963, where she filled various roles while raising 6 children, before retiring in 2000.
Maintaining her RN credentials for many years, Gwen served on the Bellmawr Board of Health, often volunteered for local blood drives and participated in the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study since its inception in 1976. She was also very active in the Bishop Eustace Prep Mother’s Club, where she served as President.
Gwen was a major sports fan. She loved watching college basketball, golf, and especially football. Most of all, she loved cheering for her children and grandchildren from the sidelines. Gwen competed in a family fantasy football league for the past several years, proudly winning the championship in 2015. For years, Gwen was an avid bowler as well. She thoroughly enjoyed casino and racetrack visits, playing cards especially poker, puzzles, and socializing with her many friends; she was famously known for her infectious laugh.
She adored the seashore and traveled around the world visiting 5 continents, but most important to Gwen was family. She was a loving and generous mother and “Mom-Mom” to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A woman of strong Catholic faith and values, she leaves a vast legacy. She will be greatly missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Friday, January 22, 2021 from 9:30 to 10:45 AM at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, 426 Monmouth St., Gloucester City.
