By Kim Jarrett | The Center Square (The Center Square) – A budget compromise reached between Gov. Phil Murphy and legislative leaders will give middle income families who meet certain income requirements a $500 tax rebate next year and increases the tax rate on resident making between $1 million to $5 million annually. Gloucestercitynews.net files Murphy tried twice before to implement the millionaire’s tax, which raises the taxes from 8.97 percent to 10.75 percent on wages over $1 million. The tax is expected to bring in about $390 million. “I vocally resisted the millionaire’s tax for years, and it wasn’t a political thing about the governor or me,” said Senate President Steve Sweeney. “I had a problem with it at the time, but the pandemic hit and things have changed. We have to face the reality that families are hurting here.” The tax rebates will be based on 2020 tax...

(CNBNEWS)-ST. LOUIS (September 2020)-— The Carter Carburetor plant in north St. Louis, one of the city’s most high-profile Superfund sites, is on the cusp of redevelopment, likely as a golf course, driving range and putt-putt green for inner-city kids. By Dorothy York, President and CEO of North American Precis Syndicate (NAPS) To know the history of American newspapers is to know the history of the United States. Some of the longest running newspapers, that helped shape this great nation, date back to prior to the American Revolution, founded during colonial times. Newspapers have been preserved in the archives of the Library of Congress for research purposes and to keep the documentation of historically significant events that have made up the fabric of our present civilized society. Chronicling America is a site produced by the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Library of Congress. The long-term goal for the site is to develop a searchable database of U. S. Newspapers. Many newspapers and related businesses have been family owned for generations. By Nathan Benefield THE CENTER SQUARE Sep 18, 2020 In recent weeks, Gov. Tom Wolf called on state legislators to enact parts of his political agenda – including legalizing recreational marijuana and mandating small businesses provide workers with paid leave benefits. Such proposals exhibit Wolf’s disconnect from what Pennsylvanians care most about during this crisis: schools, jobs and health care. Wolf, moreover, hasn’t called lawmakers to discuss his ideas or to hear their proposals. In fact, at a recent press conference, the governor couldn’t remember the last time that he spoke with legislative leaders. According to Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman, the governor hasn’t communicated directly with GOP leadership since July. Wolf’s failure to communicate even with our state’s other elected leaders reflects his administration’s ongoing transparency issues. It also illustrates his inability to gauge what resonates with Pennsylvanians. Editor's Note This column initially appeared at realclearpolicy.com. It is republished...

By Dave Lemery | The Center Square (The Center Square) – In the aftermath of the death Friday of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made clear that they will be moving quickly to fill the vacancy. McConnell released a statement late Friday saying that he would be prepared to call for a vote in the Senate once the president selects a nominee. To some observers, that stands in contrast to his decision in 2015 not to allow a vote on former President Barack Obama’s nomination of a replacement after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. But in his statement, McConnell insisted that he had always made a distinction between his refusal to consider Judge Merrick Garland as a replacement for Scalia, as opposed to his willingness to move forward now. “In the last midterm election before Justice Scalia’s death in...
