KUTZTOWN, PA (09/22/2020) Kutztown University welcomed 2,310 new students, while retention increased by 3.13% for the 2020-21 academic year.

Total enrollment for the 2020 fall semester is 7,892, down slightly from last fall (8,199 students).

New students rose by 3.3% from last year and includes 1,532 freshmen, 442 transfers and 336 graduate students. Retention of first-time, first-year undergraduate students increased to 77.32%, while persistence (the percent of overall undergraduates who continue from year-to-year) jumped 1.56% to 66.57%. The increase in retention rate is the highest for the university since 2010.

In addition, the average high school GPA of the fall 2020 freshmen class increased from 3.19 to 3.26, the highest for the university in the last 15 years.

"I want to thank our Enrollment Management and Admissions staff and the entire Kutztown University community for their hard work in recruiting a strong freshman class and improving our overall retention," said Kutztown University president Dr. Kenneth S. Hawkinson. "This effort was especially impressive given the difficult circumstances our world and higher education are facing during the pandemic. It is a great endorsement for the value of a Kutztown University education and what our institution brings to students and families of the region and beyond."

Of the 7,892 students enrolled at KU, 6,938 are undergraduates, while 954 are enrolled in graduate studies. A total of 6,927 students (88%) are Pennsylvania residents, while 965 hail from out of state.

Official figures are reported after the university's fall freeze date for enrollment status, which occurs in mid-September.
