New President Assumes Helm at Critical Juncture as Schools Plan Safe Restart
Robbinsville, N.J. – When Philip H. Nisonoff, Ed.D. took office as president of the New Jersey Association of School Business Officials (NJASBO) in early July, he had 30+ years of experience as an educator, but acknowledged feeling unprepared to face the COVID-19 pandemic and shutdown of the state’s school buildings. Nisonoff described the close of the 2019/2020 school year as “landing the plane while learning how to fly it.”
Now, school business administrators (BAs) statewide again face making novel decisions as they work with their administrative teams and boards of education to craft plans to reopen for the 2020/2021 school year.
“This is a most unprecedented and unpredictable time as BAs face some of their greatest challenges to restart schools,” said Nisonoff. “In a typical year, we play a significant role in bringing the workforce back and preparing the buildings for opening. This year, we’re redesigning plans for day-to-day operations and face significant logistical challenges such as acquiring the necessary supplies for enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols, as well as sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE). We also are reworking transportation and food service practices with safety top of mind,” added Nisonoff.
As assistant superintendent of schools and business administrator/board secretary for the Emerson Board of Education, Nisonoff works tirelessly for his district. His firsthand experiences, coupled with his passion and openness for connecting with colleagues, make him an ideal leader for NJASBO.
“Dr. Nisonoff’s extensive knowledge and experience both in the educational field and his time spent as an officer in NJASBO makes him an invaluable leader, especially at this time,” said Susan Young, NJASBO executive director. “His thoughtful, balanced and innovative ideas and strategic goals will help steer our members and the organization through these unprecedented times.”
“As a membership organization, NJASBO offers school business officials a network for sharing ideas, pooling resources and learning from each other’s experiences. We are working to ensure our members have as much information and knowledge as possible to support their efforts at the district level,” said Nisonoff.
Among Nisonoff’s goals for NJASBO for the upcoming year is to “continue strengthening our relationships with various educational organizations, state departments and state government branches.” He said NJASBO has been “well represented when state leaders looked for input from the field.”
NJASBO has worked tirelessly to track and explain information related to COVID-19, as well as flag new legislation for members in recent months. “Our organization, built over many years by amazing, dedicated school BAs, could not have been better positioned to respond and support our members during this uncertain time,” explained Nisonoff.
About Philip H. Nisonoff
Nisonoff joined the Emerson BOE in 1994 and served a stint as Interim Superintendent of Schools from December 2011 until June 2013. He also has been the Treasurer of School Moneys for the Demarest Board of Education since September 2001, and the Treasurer of the South Bergen Workers’ Compensation Pool since July 2015.
With a doctorate in education from Fordham University, a master’s in Educational Administration/School Business Administration from Kean College Graduate School of Education, and a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Rutgers University, Nisonoff began his career as a teacher. He spent two years at South River High School (1987-1989) as a math and computer science teacher, before joining the Galloway Township Board of Education in 1989 as the teacher, coordinator of management information systems and a business administrator intern. He also was an adjunct instructor of School Finance for the Educational Administration Master’s Program at Fordham University Graduate School of Education.
In other roles for NJASBO, Nisonoff served as past chairman of the Legislative Committee and is a certified school business administrator mentor. He also is a past president of the Bergen County Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) and a former executive director of the Bergen County Banking Consortium.
A past recipient of Bergen County ASBO’s Meritorious Service Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Profession, Nisonoff also received the Distinguished Service Award in Recognition of Outstanding Leadership and Contributions to Education. He also has been the recipient of NJASBO’s Meritorious Service Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Profession, and the Distinguished Service Award in Recognition of Distinguished Service to the Emerson School District.
Nisonoff was appointed by then Governor John Corzine to serve as a commissioner of the New Jersey Special Education Review Commission for 2006-2007. He also has been a member of the board of directors of the South Bergen Workers’ Compensation Pool since 1998.
Nisonoff lives with his wife, Jennifer, and their four children, Tyler, Hunter, Spencer and Sophie, in Emerson.
