(Gloucester Township NJ)(August 12, 2020)--Our meme may be funny, but it’s to get your attention about a serious phone scam. Some Gloucester Township residents received calls believing law enforcement agencies outside of NJ are calling them and threatening them with arrest. Please read.
The Scam: Very convincing imposters posing as “law enforcement” call your number, claim your social security number has been used out of state, and you have warrant for your arrest with a very high bail. They continue to scare you with being arrested and demand you send them cash immediately and NOT to go to your local police department.
The Solution: 1) Screen your calls: If you don’t recognize the number, or if the caller ID shows an agency you weren’t expecting a call from, let it go to voicemail. 2) If you do answer the phone, DO NOT voluntarily give them your name(s) or any personal information. If they already know your name (which they could have found on online to convince you) and threaten arrest and/ or demand money HANG UP and call Gloucester Township Police or your local PD and ask to speak to an officer. A real police officer can easily verify your information and warrant status.
Please share this information with your family member, especially with those who may become easily confused and believe a convincing scammer. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Community Relations Unit at 856-228-4011 or email Police@GTPolice.com . Thank you.
