AC Resident Found in Stolen MV Attemps to Escape Gloucester Township PD

BLACKWOOD, NJ (August 31, 2020)--On 08-29-2020 at approximately 10:30 PM, Police Officers on patrol in the area of Little Gloucester Road in Blackwood observed a gray Kia sedan, which was reported stolen out of Pennsylvania. As the vehicle entered the Autumn Ridge Apartment complex, officers attempted a motor vehicle stop. The vehicle quickly fled from officers on Erial Road, refusing to stop and operating in a reckless manner, so officers quickly terminated the pursuit and last saw the vehicle enter Blackwood Estates.
Plain clothes and unmarked police vehicles entered the area and located the stolen vehicle now unoccupied and abandoned in the area of State Street and Carol Avenue. A perimeter was established by officers and a K-9 track was initiated. A short time later, officers observed the suspect in the area of Evergreen Avenue riding a bicycle. With a police K-9 team tracking his trail, the suspect had left the bicycle and fled towards the fence line of the Autumn Ridge Apartment Complex. The suspect climbed the fence, discarded some of his clothing that he was wearing and began running through the courtyard of the complex.
Officers converged on the complex and located the suspect a short time later while attempting to hide from police officers in the stairwell of a building. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. There were no injuries during this incident.
The accused, Elijah Thomas from Atlantic City, was charged with Receiving Stolen Property, Eluding, Resisting Arrest by Flight, and numerous traffic violations. He was remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility pending First Court Appearance in accordance with the NJ Bail Reform Act.
