COVID-19 has affected all areas of the hospital and we've had to change policies and procedures which have impacted the patient experience. For children, fear and anxiety can be heightened when they see a nurse or physician completely covered in PPE, unable to share a comforting smile.
When children are hospitalized at Cooper, the Child Life Team provides physical and emotional support to our young patients. They prepare children for what to expect, provide distraction during medical procedures, and help children express their feelings through music, play and art.
The Child Life Program often uses toys, books, crafts and games to help make a child's stay less stressful and bring smiles during a challenging time.
We Need Your Help
Due to the impact of COVID-19 and the measures taken to prevent the spread of infection, we have gone through more toys and supplies than normal and our stock has dwindled. We are mostly utilizing single-use toys so that children and parents are not sharing items with other patients.
Additionally, the current visitor restrictions and limitations on using the pediatric playroom have made it so children need activities they can do in their rooms, such as playing with smaller toys, art sets and watching movies.
We are currently seeking donations of a variety of toys and activities to replenish our supply to support the Child Life Team so they can comfort our youngest patients.
We are also asking for infant toys for use in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The NICU uses these items to promote sensory development, mobility, and social development. Mirror toys are great for face recognition, especially when staff are wearing masks and babies cannot see their faces.
