By Kim Jarrett | The Center Square (Trenton NJ) – A bond issue proposed by Gov. Phil Murphy is headed for a vote by the State Assembly next week as lawmakers grapple with the economic effects of the novel Gloucestercitynews.net files coronavirus pandemic. The state is facing a $10 billion budget shortfall over the next two years, according to numbers from State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio. The degree of uncertainty in the state budget is “far above the norm,” said Frank Haines, legislative budget and finance officer to the Assembly Budget Committee. “The local governments, other public entities, and service providers that are accustomed to a clearer picture of the state budget’s impact on them and the citizens they serve are no doubt unsettled,” Haines told the committee. “After all, we did not extend their fiscal years.” The discrepancy in revenue estimates was troubling some Republicans who participated in an Assembly budget committee hearing on Thursday. “The administration was not confident in their revenue estimates,” Assemblyman Hal... What to know about the Economic Impact Payment debit cards

May 30, 2020 by Cristina Miranda Division of Consumer and Business Education, FTC If you’re still waiting for your Economic Impact Payments, you might be getting a debit card instead of a check in the mail. This, of course, is the money that’s meant to give relief due to the Coronavirus pandemic. You may have already gotten your payment by direct deposit or by check. But if you’re still waiting, watch your mailbox for either a check or a VISA debit card. And know that the government will never, ever call, text, email, or ask you to click on a link they sent to activate your card or get your money. Here’s what to know if your payment comes in the form of a debit card. Look for the prepaid card (and its envelope) in the mail. The envelope will be from “Money Network Cardholder Service.” Inside will be a VISA-branded prepaid card issued by MetaBank. This card will give you access to your economic impact payment. Activate the card immediately. The mailer will give you instructions on how to activate the card, but here’s the deal: You can activate your card by calling 1-800-240-8100 or visiting USdebitcard.gov and clicking... Read more →

(NAPSI)—Backyarding—the trend to move all sorts of indoor activities outside—has become a permanent part of many people’s lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. The backyard became a safe haven from the stress of quarantining by letting people reconnect with nature and each other, move work and play outside, and expand their living space into green space. The backyarding trend is here to stay. Home improvement projects abound, and many homeowners are investing in outdoor power equipment so they can take care of their yards. “Overall, the industry saw shipments of outdoor power equipment increase by more than 5 million units—a jump of 16 percent from last year—and those levels are expected to remain elevated in 2021,” said Kris Kiser, President and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing manufacturers and suppliers of outdoor power equipment, small engines, battery power systems, portable generators, utility and personal transport vehicles, and golf cars. “People are really investing in their backyards and outdoor living spaces,” said Kiser. “There is tremendous innovation occurring right now in our industry—with battery, electric, solar, propane and gasoline-powered equipment available for any job you might have in your yard.” He offered a few tips... Guest Opinion: Nursing Home Data Shows PA Health Secretary Unfit for Office

By Pennsylvania State Rep. Russ Diamond | The Center Square Gov. Tom Wolf and Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine recommend nonessential businesses statewide close for two weeks amid the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. Commonwealth Media Services Last week, I introduced a resolution in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives calling on Pennsylvania Department of Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine to either resign or be removed from office by Gov. Tom Wolf. I do not take my oath of office to my constituents lightly and I do not introduce this resolution to sow division. Hundreds of my constituents have sought help from the Wolf administration during this chaotic government shut down to no avail. If he will not hear them because his office’s phone has been redirected to the Department of Health, or the phones and live chat at the Department of Labor are constantly busy, or he and Secretary Levine won’t take live questions and follow-ups from the press, then he will hear them through me. That is my duty as an elected state representative. I introduced this resolution on Monday, May 18, with the backdrop of several editorials in our state press calling for transparency from the Wolf administration, and... Read more →

REOPEN SOUTH JERSEY NOW, Gov. Murphy

TRENTON, NJ --May 29, 2020--Senator Michael Testa is calling on Senate President Steve Sweeney to join forces and take the necessary steps to fully open the Garden State economy. Gloucestercitynews.net files “Our South Jersey restaurants are barely making ends meet. Last week, the Mayor of North Wildwood created a well-organized plan to allow community restaurants to open up and enjoy the beautiful weather,” said Testa. “What did our heavy handed Cape May County prosecutor do? He followed Gov. Murphy’s orders and shut down the plan. Then the governor’s administration had a helicopter monitor the city. Are we currently living in George Orwell’s 1984?” In efforts to prevent alcohol on North Wildwood roads, Mayor Patrick Rosenello established designated areas for people to drink safety. However, the areas were shut down by the Cape May County prosecutor according to reports from New Jersey 101.5. “This is about the economic collapse of the tourism industry, which is one of the largest industries in the State of New Jersey and the only industry for many parts of the State,” Mayor Rosenello said. “Senator Testa and I have been outspoken for weeks about this issue. The Governor received widespread support and buy-in from millions of... Read more →

Sewell Contractor Involved with Direct Connection Project Cited by Justice Department

NEWARK, N.J. – The Justice Department today sued a Gloucesster County construction company for allegedly defrauding the United States by falsely claiming credit for using disadvantaged business entities, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced. C. Abbonizio Contractors Inc., a company based in Sewell, New Jersey, allegedly defrauded the government by claiming to use disadvantaged entities when those entities were not actually used to perform work. Companies performing federally funded work on New Jersey transportation projects sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) are required to utilize disadvantaged business entities (DBE) for a specified percentage of the work, and are required to certify their use of these entities. According to the complaint filed today in U.S. District Court: Abbonizio Contractors obtained a $39 million subcontract from PKF Mark III, the prime contractor on the Direct Connection Project, a federally funded reconfiguration of the interchanges of Routes I-295, I-76, and Route 42 in Camden County. PKF Mark III was required to perform 15 percent of the work with DBE contractors, and Abbonizio Contractors assumed that requirement as part of its subcontract. Abbonizio Contractors and its president, Peter Abbonizio, improperly claimed credit for using DBE to perform work on the project by... Read more →

FBI NOTES: Billion-Dollar Secrets Stolen

Scientist Sentenced for Theft of Trade Secrets When scientist Hongjin Tan resigned from the Oklahoma petroleum company he’d worked at for 18 months, he told his superiors that he planned to return to China to care for his aging parents. He also reported that he hadn’t arranged his next job, so the company agreed to let him to stay in his role until his departure date in December 2018. But Tan told a colleague a different story over dinner. That conversation prompted Tan’s employer to ask him to leave the firm immediately—and then his employer made a call to the FBI tip line to report a possible crime. The resulting investigation led to Tan’s guilty plea and 24-month prison sentence for stealing proprietary information that belonged to his company. Tan’s theft of a trade secret—one worth an estimated $1 billion—is an example of what the FBI says is a systematic campaign by the Chinese government to gain economic advantage by stealing the innovative work of U.S. companies and facilities. Tan had lived in the United States since 2012 and was a legal permanent resident. He earned his Ph.D. at an American university and had worked for a number of firms... Read more →

NJBIA Releases New Reopening of NJ Infographic Identifying State's Pain Points

The New Jersey Business & Industry Association today released a new Reopening New Jersey infographic, identifying the state's pain points and urging swift solutions to bring much-needed certainty and predictability now to New Jersey businesses. The infographic, found here, follows a business coalition letter sent to Gov. Phil Murphy last week detailing and expressing the immediate need of the administration to take industry best practices and create prescriptive guidance for businesses to reopen. "If these solutions found in the Reopening New Jersey infographic are followed, it will give businesses and nonprofits the predictability and certainty they desperately need now to reopen," NJBIA President and CEO Michele Siekerka said. "Part of that predictability and certainty demands having metrics with specific targets, as our neighboring states like Pennsylvania and New York have done as part of their reopening plans." The Reopening New Jersey infographic calls for the establishment and assessment of: Metrics with specific targets that will determine when a business can safely reopen Prescriptive guidance from the state to safely operate with ongoing CDC guidelines Specific risk levels (industry, size, capacity, geography) versus one-size-fits-all solutions "This guidance is critical to businesses because every penny they have at this point is precious,"... The New Jersey Sierra Club have sent a letter to Commissioner McCabe asking for help and to prevent the school from closing. “One of New Jersey’s first conservation schools is in jeopardy of closing. This would be a terrible loss for the state when it comes to environmental education. The School of Conservation is truly one of the best places in New Jersey to study pollution, climate, conservation and more in the middle of a major wildlife area. They have educated hundreds of thousands of students and provided tens of thousands of critical environmental education programs. However, Montclair State University now claims they can no longer afford to keep the school’s lights on,” said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club. “We are about to lose one of most important... Budd’s Pools & Spas Offers FREE At-Home Water Testing For Pools and Hot Tubs Deptford, N.J.—As pools get uncovered and the summer swimming season approaches, COVID-19 store closures have made testing of water safety difficult for home pool owners to obtain. Murphy Promises State Residents New Information Friday on COVID-19 Lockdown

By Kim Jarrett | The Center Square The Center Square) – New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said Thursday he will give new guidance on “where we’re headed” on Friday and in the next few days but did not say specify what he will discuss. The governor met with a bipartisan group on Wednesday and the discussion ranged from youth sports to small businesses, he said. The state has been under a stay-at-home order since March. Murphy has relaxed some restrictions including allowing curbside pick-ups for retailers and the opening of motor vehicle showrooms. Beaches and state parks are also open. Republican lawmakers are asking Murphy to clarify his plans for reopening the rest of the state. On Thursday, Sen. Michael Testa asked Senate President Steve Sweeney and other senators to join with him on a plan to reopen the state’s economy, saying some restaurants in his South Jersey district are struggling. “Last week, the Mayor of North Wildwood created a well-organized plan to allow community restaurants to open up and enjoy the beautiful weather,” Testa said. “What did our heavy-handed Cape May County prosecutor do? He followed Gov. Murphy’s orders and shut down the plan.” New Jersey residents supported Murphy... Read more →

Freeholder Director on Bellmawr Gym Dispute

The statement below is by Camden County Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr., regarding the defiance of Gov. Phil Murphy’s executive order. “Last week, New Jersey Department of Health Commissioner, Judith Persichilli, signed an order closing a gym in Bellmawr which has been operating in defiance of Governor Phil Murphy’s Executive Order closing nonessential businesses. The commissioner’s order will continue to maintain measures set forth to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our county and statewide. Today, more than 5,900 of our residents have been infected with COVID-19 and tragically more than 287 have died from this insidious disease since March 1 in Camden County. As I stated earlier this week, we are experiencing a public health crisis, the likes of which has not been seen in this state since the 1918 Spanish Flu. More than 10,700 New Jersey residents have lost their lives, and the county and our towns have had to take aggressive action to save lives and break the back of this virus. No one has been immune to the economic ramifications of this crisis, least of all our small business owners. Unfortunately, the reality of our current situation is that there cannot be a healthy economy without... Read more →

2nd District Congressional Candidate on Floyd Murder

BRIGANTINE, NJ -Democratic Congressional candidate Amy Kennedy (2nd District-NJ)issued the following statement today regarding the alleged murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer(s). “George Floyd was needlessly murdered in the streets of Minneapolis this week. He was the most recent victim in a seemingly endless string of acts of violence against people of color in America. This isn’t a time for silence. Silence is acceptance. It’s a time for all people of conscience to stand up and say enough. The police officers guilty of this crime need to be investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. But that’s just a start. There are moments in history that grab us and demand that we change. That happened in 1968 and another moment is upon us now. We have a President and an administration that has encouraged racism, hate groups and has condoned violence. Leadership matters and we need some new ones in America. People of color in America in the 21st century need to be able to send their children out without fear that they will be attacked because of the color of their skin. And they need to know that the people who have sworn to... Read more →

Workers at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Launch Union Drive

PHILADELPHIA, PA--After a year of organizing, staff members at the Philadelphia Museum of Art launched a union drive. On Friday, they announced their intent to join District Council 47 of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). By unionizing, organizers are hoping the museum, which is currently closed because of Covid-19, will prioritize worker and visitor safety and maintaining programs that serve the community as it works to recover from the financial fallout from the pandemic. Employees also want to unionize to empower staff who face incidents of harassment and discrimination. In January, the museum was criticized over its mishandling of previous misconduct allegations against a male manager, who resigned in 2018 and then went on to become the director of the Erie Art Museum. Following a New York Times report which interviewed nine women who worked with Joshua Helmer at the PMA, hundreds of current and former employees signed a statement of solidarity with the women who spoke out, and Pennsylvania lawmakers called for “structural change” at the museum, including new harassment policies and training. Helmer, who declined to comment to the_Times, _was forced out... Read more →

A Near-Death Experience

By: Joe Ball | CNBNews Contributor I think I know what death is. I had a “near-death” experience. It was nothing like the recollections of the people featured recently in the Inquirer by staff writer Faye Flan. Those people told of happy near-death experiences involving light, flowers, music, and even a beautiful male angel. T’aint from one who knows (or so thinks) Joe Ball My experience came several days after an emergency gall bladder operation. I was released from the hospital – weak, but seemingly on the way to complete recovery. My first evening home – three days after the operation – I told my wife, Sandy, “I feel tired. I’m going to bed.” It was about 7 p.m., not quite four days after the operation. She said, “I’ll tuck you in,” from the first floor to our second level. At the top of the steps, I remember saying, “I don’t feel good.” And I remember falling frontwards, slowly. My hands automatically went out in front of me to break the fall. I knew I was going down, but I do not remember hitting the floor. My next memory was a policeman and emergency squad personnel surrounding me, while I... Read more →
