Generally, adult dogs should be fed twice a day. Under normal circumstances a meat-and-plant based diet is ideal. According to the VCA (Veterinary Centers of America) dogs’ diets need to include the essential vitamins and amino acids found in many high-end dry dog foods. Whether to supplement dry food with meat and/or vegetables is a matter of debate.
You can research on-line and find out the ideal weight that matches the breed(s) of your dog. An easy way to do a visual check is to observe Fido while he is standing on all four legs. His body should be more slender in the middle (his ‘waist’) and he should not have a belly that hangs.
Ask your veterinarian if she thinks your dog’s weight is within appropriate parameters. An excessive amount of weight gain or loss may be an indication of a health concern.
