“I wanna tell you, kid and I’ll give it to you square. I’m leaving you. I’m sorry it shook out this way but you and me don’t belong together, see?”

“Oh Roscoe, how can you say that? How can you? After all we’ve been through. How many times did I fight with my mother and father, telling them you’re a swell guy.”

“It’s no good I tell you! Your parents think one way and that ain’t the way I think, see? They got a good life with a white picket fence and a garden and you’ll never have that with me! I’m a drifter and there ain’t no way you’ll have that kinda life with me.”

“I don’t want that kind of life! I want you! I’d give it all up to be with you, Roscoe, you know I would!”

“Kid, I tell ya it ain’t gonna work. Aw, don’t cry now, don’t cry. It’s for the best.”

“I have to tell you something, that’s why I’m crying. I’ve been keeping it from you for a while, now.”

“What? What is it? Are you okay? Geez, if anything was to happen to you—”

“Hold me. Hold me tight.”

“Sure kid, sure. Is it…are you--?”

“I didn’t want to tell you until I was sure.”

“Oh kid! Well, that changes everything, don’t it? When’s it supposed to arrive?”

“Day after tomorrow.”

“Okay, okay. We’ll pack a bag! I’ll change my ways, I swear. We'll buy a house with a fence, see? Will it be a boy or a girl?”

“Does it matter, darling?”

“No, of course not! Where do we have to go when it’s time?”

“To the rest stop on the border of Delaware and Maryland. The rescue transport said noon. Oh, Roscoe I’m so happy!”

“Me too, kid.  I wanted a dog for a long time. I can hardly wait. How about that, me a father to a rescued mutt. Oh, kid, you’re the best!”

“No, Roscoe, you’re the best!”

We’re the best, kid. We’re the best…”
