Some dogs are escape artists, darting outside whenever they see an opportunity. It's not that they don't enjoy their homes, it's just that they seek the outdoors or a good chase!
When you are walking a newly-adopted dog try to take him on the same route every day so that he sees how to get from Point A to Point B. He will smell the pathway back to your house and it will be ingrained in him.
When you are on your way home from a walk say the phrase, "Let's go home!" at the end of each walk. That way, if he decides to "run away" later, he'll find his way. When folks see a stray dog, chances are they will say, "Go home!" to him. That may be just the information Fido needs to remind him where he belongs!
