I am often asked if I approve of dogs being “dressed” for cold weather. The short answer is ‘yes’.
Small dogs and hairless breeds can easily suffer from hypothermia. If they are cold for long periods of time, they may freeze to death. It’s important to keep them from becoming over-exposed to harsh weather.
Never allow your small or medium-sized dog outdoors without being right by his side. If you are cold, he is cold! It is now a felony in many states to have an untended dog outside without shelter or water for longer than an hour. This rule should be changed to disallow a small dog to remain out-of-doors in any extreme temperature for longer than a few minutes!
Your small or medium dog will do well with a fitted jacket or sweater. One can be cheaply made by cutting the sleeve of an old shirt to size or looking for bargains at a thrift store.
It’s as important to keep your pets safe and cozy as it is the rest of your family! In return your dog will reward you with loyalty and good health throughout his life.
