NJ WILL RESTORE VOTING RIGHTS FOR CERTAIN CRIMINALS

In Trenton yesterday, the state Assembly voted to approve a measure that will give certain convicted criminals who are on parole the right to vote. The bill passed 46 to 23, with one abstention. If it clears the state Senate and is later signed by Gov. Phil Murphy 4ef2ddad-68fe-4367-af9d-5f794a541b69— who has said he plans to do so — New Jersey would become the 20th state to restore voting rights for parolees. (NJTV News)

HERE'S HOW RACIAL DISPARITIES PERSIST AMONG NJ KIDS

A new report published by the Advocates for Children of New Jersey on Friday "for the first time includes some measures of child well-being by race and ethnicity," Colleen O'Dea writes. The Kids Count County Data Dashboardfeatures a county-by-county breakdown. For example, one in 10 Hispanic babies and nearly 15% of Black babies were born underweight, compared with 8% of white babies. Prenatal care also followed a racist pattern. (NJ Spotlight)

NJ COULD BAN GAY, TRANS 'PANIC' AS DEFENSE IN COURT

A controversial legal defense strategy — claiming temporary insanity due to a "panic" caused by discovering someone's sexual orientation or gender identity — is one step closer to being thrown out in every court in our state. That's what's in the cards if the state Senate passes a bill that the state Assembly approved yesterday. New Jersey would be the ninth state to do so.  (WHYY)

'MOVE OVER,' OR YOU COULD GET POINTS ON YOUR LICENSE

Yesterday, the state Assembly unanimously passed the "Move Over" law, which stipulates that drivers must change lanes on the highway if a police officer is issuing a ticket on the shoulder. If you don't, the bill says, you'd get two points on your driver's license. (The current fine is between $100 and $500.) The next step for this bill is the Senate, and then Gov. Phil Murphy's desk.
