NJ NEWS COMMONS: OFFICIALS ASK NJ TO SHUT DOWN MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY

Manalapan Mayor Susan Cohen sent a letter to Gov. Phil Murphy, urging the state to shut down the Manalapan (formerly Marianne) Manor facility on Route 33. "The 50 or so residents at this facility are housed in a manner that should not be acceptable with anyone," the letter reads. Three residents have died while walking from the facility to local shops. Local police responded to 339 calls at the facility between July 1 to November 5, 2019.  (Asbury Park Press)

GET HELP PAYING FOR GROCERIES, STATE URGES

Gov. Phil Murphy has declared Nov. 10 to 16 as SNAP Awareness Week. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program's sign-up numbers are relatively low: 700,000 New Jerseyans are enrolled, while about 900,000 people in our state are "food insecure." The state department of Human Services is reaching out at these locations, and here's where to check if you qualify. (NJTV News)

NJ RESIDENTS WANT MORE GUN CONTROL, POLL SUGGESTS

A Fairleigh Dickinson University poll released on Thursday surveyed 800 residents in our state. An overwhelming majority of the participants supported mandatory background checks (92%) and more funding for mental health programs (92%). About twice as many Democrats supported a nationwide assault rife ban than than Republicans (84% to 43%, respectively). (NJ 101.5)

If you have something to share — and it's about NJ Transit — then get yourself to Hoboken Terminal at 5 P.M. tomorrow. That's what's on the calendar for a state Senate committee formed by the chamber's President, Steve Sweeney. The group is investigating NJ Transit. "It’s time to stop talking about how good we are […] because the commuters I’ve been talking to don’t feel that way," Sweeney said when he launched the probe last month. (NorthJersey.com)
