Kind of a cool story:
This story is somewhat frustrating to me because I can't quite figure out what is classified, what isn't, and what's not even accurate.
Take, for instance, this piece from Newsweek:
When U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers with the secretive Joint Special Operations Command flew into Syria's northwestern Idlib province to capture or kill Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a male Belgian Malinois was along for the ride in the historic military operation. His name is Conan, Newsweek has learned.
On Monday, President Donald Trump tweeted out a picture of the military dog assigned to 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, known as Delta Force, a unit that falls under the secretive Joint Special Operations Command.
"We have declassified a picture of the wonderful dog (name not declassified) that did such a GREAT JOB in capturing and killing the Leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi," Trump tweeted from his official account.
Multiple Defense Department sources confirmed to Newsweek on Monday that the dog's name is Conan. During a Sunday morning press conference to announce the death of Baghdadi, Trump said the dog was injured when the Islamic State leader detonated a suicide vest, killing himself and three children.
Note that Newsweek says the dog is male. Compare that with the Guardian:
Donald Trump has tweeted a photo of a dog that took part in the raid targeting the Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
The “wonderful” Belgian Malinois was injured when Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest on Saturday night inside his Syrian compound.
Trump said he had declassified the image of the dog, but not its name. However, a Newsweek report citing multiple sources said the dog was called Conan – after the comedian Conan O’Brien – and was female.
On Sunday, the US president had hailed the dog as a “good boy”, “beautiful” and “talented”, who had chased down Baghdadi moments before he detonated his vest. The dog sustained minor injuries and was being treated by vets.
Whether boy or girl, Conan is awesome, but if they can't figure out the gender right, I'm not sure how much of the rest of the story to take with a grain of salt.
But I understand why they use Belgian Malinois over say a Puggle or Boston Terrier. I've literally seen both of my dogs fall off the couch when they were asleep.
There was a dog on the Bin Ladin raid as well.
