On Friday, state Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced that the state is bringing suits against six businesses that have allegedly polluted sites in lower-income areas: a dump in Camden, a gas station in East Orange, a scrap yard in Kearny, a former plant in Newark, and two dry cleaners in Trenton. These lawsuits support Gov. Phil Murphy administration's commitment (via executive order) "to stand up for environmental justice and to fight for communities across the state that have been ignored in the past," Grewal said. HERE'S THE ONLY STATEWIDE QUESTION ON THE BALLOT

State Question Number 1 on the ballot was unanimously approved by both houses of the Legislature — and on Nov. 5, it will be presented to voters. If it passes, roughly 3,000 veterans who live in retirement communities would be able to take a $250 property tax deduction, just like veterans who live in the houses they own. Why penalize veterans who don't age in place? (NJTV News)

FIRM TO PAY $15M TO NJ TO SETTLE OPIOID-RELATED FRAUD

Under a settlement agreement unveiled on Thursday, Reckitt Benckiser will pay New Jersey's Medicaid program $15 million for allegedly inflating the price of Suboxone and leading physicians to over- and improperly prescribe it. The Parisppany-based firm will pay $700 million total — that covers suits from six states. It's important to note that the drug is safe when used as prescribed — and for many, it's a crucial part of recovery. (Morristown Daily Record / The Hill)

HORSE RACING: "MOST STRINGENT ANTI-WHIP RULES" IN U.S.

The New Jersey Racing Commission is considering a set of rule changes to make the sport safer for jockeys and horses — at least incrementally. PETA says horse racing should be banned, full stop, though the group also supports at least one reform the state commission has proposed: to eliminate horse whipping (except in case of emergency).
