Vincent M. Russo Gloucester City – On August 24, 2019. Age 30. Vince was the kind of person who touched lives. His existence was anything but insignificant. It doesn’t matter how long the conversation was, people remembered him. He will live on through his daughter, his mother, his George, his grandparents, his brothers, his sisters, his nieces, his friends - for he has left a small piece of himself in each of us. He will live on through the breeze while we drive with the windows down and music blaring. He will live on through the single leaf that catches our eye as it falls to the ground. He will live on through the stars that we gaze up at with our bodies resting in the grass. Most of all he will live on through our hearts that were lucky enough to have felt his love. Yesterday, in Muscatine, Iowa, I presented my education and 'training for a lifetime' policy - which plans for skill training and retraining throughout one’s career, as well early education through post-secondary. You can read it in full here. People are often surprised when I say that “education is our best homeland defense,” given my 31-year service in the military, but I firmly believe that education is the bedrock of a successful society. We need a skilled population that can out-innovate our competitors and create the jobs of the future. As a father, I know that America’s youth are our national treasure. It is they who will continue to make our country prosper for generations to come. But sadly, too many of our nation’s youth are unable to get a world-class education or training today. As President, I will work every day to improve our educational and training system and ensure...

CHUCK ROSS INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER August 29, 2019 The Justice Department’s inspector general sharply criticized James Comey on Thursday, saying in a report that the former FBI director violated bureau policy in the handling of memos that he wrote after conversations with President Donald Trump. The report details how Comey handled seven memos he wrote between Jan. 6, 2017 and April 11, 2017, following interactions he had with Trump. The inspector general’s office determined that four of those memos contained information classified as “Secret” or “Confidential.” Comey, who was fired as FBI director on May 9, 2017, provided four of the memos to his personal attorneys after his ouster. He also gave screen shots of one memo to his close personal friend with instructions to provide the information to The New York Times. Comey testified on June 8, 2017 to the Senate Intelligence Committee that he directed the friend, Daniel Richman,...

EPA to hold public meeting on September 11 NEW YORK (August 27, 2019)(Gloucestercitynews.net) – Because levels of contamination in groundwater are falling naturally, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to amend part of its previous plan to clean up an area of the Lightman Drum Company Superfund site in Winslow Township, New Jersey. The amendment revises the plan to require continued monitoring of natural decreases of contaminants in former areas of highly-contaminated groundwater, or hot spots, and no longer requires groundwater to be extracted and treated. “This revised cleanup plan represents significant environmental progress for the people of New Jersey and the restoration of land and groundwater impacted by the contamination,” said EPA Regional Administrator Pete Lopez. “EPA is moving forward with a scientifically and economically sound approach to clean up the Lightman Drum Company Superfund site while maintaining the protection of human health and the environment.” EPA’s...

Surgeon General Encourages Youth and Pregnant Women Not to Use Marijuana Today, Surgeon General Vice Adm. Jerome M. Adams, issued an advisory emphasizing the importance of protecting youth and pregnant women from the health risks of marijuana use. Marijuana, or cannabis, is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a component of marijuana, binds to receptors in the brain, producing euphoria and a variety of potentially harmful effects, including intoxication and memory and motor impairments. Newer strains of marijuana have also shown to be increasingly more potent, leading to other risks like anxiety, agitation, paranoia and psychosis. “Marijuana is a dangerous drug, especially for young people and pregnant women,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. “This historic Surgeon General’s advisory is focused on the risks marijuana poses for these populations, which have been well-established by scientific evidence. As indicated by President Trump’s generous donation of his...

LEWES Delaware(Aug. 29, 2019) – The Point at Cape Henlopen State Park will reopen today, August 29, DNREC’s Division of Parks & Recreation announced. The area to reopen includes a stretch of ocean beach and dunes that was previously closed on March 1 to benefit more than 30 species of shorebirds including up to 11 species of terns, six species of gulls, the brown pelican, and the double-crested cormorant as well as threatened and endangered species such as red knots, piping plovers, least terns, oystercatchers, and others. Piping plovers, least terns and oystercatchers nest on the upper portion of the beach between the high tide line and the toe of the dunes and on large flat areas known as “washover flats” created by storm waves. The flat areas with no or little vegetation are attractive to these species because they provide direct access to the bay where waves are smaller,...

KEARNY–(August 28, 2019)(Gloucestercitynews.net)-- Senate President Steve Sweeney and Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg today urged the federal government to provide funding for the Portal Bridge, noting that it is not only an integral part of the Gateway Tunnel project, but also critical to improve New Jersey Transit’s on-time service performance. “The Portal Bridge is the biggest single bottleneck on the Northeast Corridor and the single worst cause of delays on NJ Transit,” said Senator Sweeney (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland. “Replacement of this 108-year-old swing bridge is long overdue and should be a top priority in the upcoming FY20 federal budget. This project is shovel-ready and there should be no further delay.” “The State of New Jersey has already pledged $600 million in Economic Development Authority bonding for the Portal Bridge reconstruction,” said Senator Weinberg (D-Bergen). “There is no more suitable use for bonding than for the construction of bridges and tunnels designed to last...

Newswise — ITHACA, N.Y. – Ever-widening divisions between Democrats and Republicans are believed to reflect deeply rooted ideological differences, but a new study points to a radically different interpretation: it may be mostly a matter of luck. It’s a phenomenon that Michael Macy, Cornell University professor and director of the Social Dynamics Laboratory, calls an “opinion cascade” – in which partisans pile onto whatever emerging position they identify with their party. Macy is author of “Opinion Cascades and the Unpredictability of Partisan Polarization,” published Aug. 28 in Science Advances. Social scientists have long wondered how political partisanship develops, and even more confusing is the tendency of U.S. political parties to radically shift platforms. Macy asks: “Why have the major political parties shifted positions on issues like free trade, balanced budgets, legalization of marijuana, same-sex marriage and trust in science? And how is it that voters on both sides often have...

Giffords (Formerly LCAV) Looks to Split Gun Owners to Enact Controls SUPPORT NRA-ILA Divide et impera; divide and rule; divide and conquer. For millennia political actors have understood that one of the most effective means of defeating your enemy is to divide them and set the component parts against each other. For what seems nearly as long, gun control supporters have sought to separate gun owners from their rights by using this strategy. The civilian disarmament industry’s latest attempt to split gun owners comes courtesy of Giffords. In recent weeks, the group has been promoting its newly-concocted and misleadingly-named state “Gun Owners for Safety” groups. For those unfamiliar with the gun control movement’s perpetual rebranding schemes, Giffords is a combination of the gun control groups Americans for Responsible Solutions and the San Francisco-based Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which was previously named the Legal Community Against Violence (LCAV). According...
