(Gloucester City, NJ)(May 24, 2019)The raw video taken today around 6PM shows the traffic backup on Market Street heading out of Gloucester City towards Route 130. Although this is a normal occurrence on Market Street on Friday evenings during the summer the emergency bridge repairs on I-76 over Klemm Avenue added to the traffic nightmare. The Klemm Avenue overpass was declared one of the most dangerous in the United States in 2013.
(Lindenwold, NJ) – Freeholder Susan Shin Angulo, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works, has been notified by the New Jersey Department of Transportation that emergency bridge repairs on I-76 over Klemm Avenue in Gloucester City have caused several closures.
“These emergency repairs are expected to cause significant congestion and closures in both directions at different times,” Shin Angulo said. “Motorists planning to travel to or from Philadelphia using I-76 should determine alternate routes and avoid the work area to the best of their ability. As always, if you must travel through the construction zone, you are advised to pay extra attention and exhibit additional caution when around crews and work vehicles.”
As of 12:30 p.m. today, Friday, May 24, the two left-most lanes of I-76 westbound have been closed for emergency concrete deck repairs. The remaining four lanes of the roadway will remain open. This work is expected to be completed by 7 p.m. tonight.
Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, the two right-most lanes and shoulder of I-76 eastbound will be closed for emergency deck repairs. This work is expected to last approximately 8 hours.
Once work on the right lanes is complete, a single left lane and shoulder on I-76 eastbound will be closed until about noon on Saturday, May 25 for emergency repairs. There are normally five lanes in the eastbound direction. At least three lanes will remain open while the repairs are being made.
Klemm Avenue was also closed at approximately 12:30 p.m. today, and will remain closed for the duration of the emergency work, which is expected to end around noon tomorrow, Saturday May 25. Motorists are advised to use Market Street as an alternate route.
Multiple crews will be working on the bridge deck to repair exposed rebar and concrete spalls, as well as under the bridge on Klemm Avenue.
Motorists on I-76 heading to or from Philadelphia via the Walt Whitman or Ben Franklin Bridges should expect congestion and delays, and are encouraged to consider alternate routes.
Variable Message Signs will provide advance notification to motorists of the traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
