to Protest Trump’s Offshore Drilling Plan
Bradley Beach, NJ (May 18, 2019)(gloucestercitynews.net)--Today, New Jersey residents, NJ Assemblyman Houghtaling, NJ Assemblywoman Downey, Bradley Beach Mayor, Gary Engelstad, The New Jersey Sierra Club, Clean Ocean Action, and the Surfrider Foundation will be joining hands in Bradley Beach in opposition to offshore drilling and seismic testing. They are locking hands to stand up against Trump and his oil drilling cronies from threatening our coasts. This is one of hundreds of synchronized events globally to raise awareness about the dangers of dirty fuels and the need to speed the transition to available, affordable clean energy solutions. Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club, released the following statement:
“We have never had a Hands Across the Sand where our coast is more at risk for offshore drilling than they are now. President Trump is trying to drill off our precious Jersey Shore and we are here to tell him hands off our coast! His plan to open the Atlantic and Arctic for seismic testing and offshore drilling is completely reckless. If drilling happens, the possibility of an oil spill or leak would threaten New Jersey’s entire coastal economy and cause irreparable impacts to our ecosystem. Today, wd are making a symbolic wall across our beach to say no to oil drilling off our coast! No oil, no way no how!
“We must do everything we can to protect our shores, communities, and industries from the threats of offshore drilling. Our state will not only be at risk from a spill or explosion, but we will see more climate impacts threatening people and property. If we had drilling platforms off our coast and a storm like Sandy hit, we could see catastrophic spills like what happened after Katrina where 200 oil rigs were destroyed. We can end up with oil derricks on our beaches.
“An oil spill off the coast of New Jersey could trigger more dramatic decline in tourism. We are telling Donald Trump hands off our $38 billion coastal economy. New Jersey’s coastal tourism industry supports nearly 500,000 jobs, and one out of every six of the state’s jobs are linked in some form to its shoreline. Commercial and recreational fishing in New Jersey support 50,000 jobs and generate $8 billion annually. When you have linguini and clam sauce by the shore you don’t want it to taste like Quaker state.
“The Trump Administration is also pushing for seismic testing. This will not only harass animals but can cause severe damage and can even lead to mass strandings of mammals and possibly death. Imagine having an underwater fireworks display going off around you 24/7 for 30 days. This is what it would be like for marine mammals, especially whales and dolphins. The Sierra Club has already filed a lawsuit against this senseless proposal that will defend our safety, ecosystem, fisheries, and coastal economies from Trump’s dangerous and greedy actions.
“Interior Secretary Bernhardt said that Trump’s offshore drilling plan is on hold for now because of the court caseNo. 3:17-cv-00101-SLG that the Sierra Club is part of. But that is only temporary. The Administration can come back at any time to start seismic testing and drilling. The New Jersey Sierra Club has also filed suit against Trump’s seismic testing to defend our safety, ecosystem, fisheries and coastal economies from Trump’s dangerous and greedy actions. We need to keep fighting and keep suing because Trump can come back and drill.
“We should not gamble with our coastal tourism industry, ecosystems, fisheries and most importantly, the safety of the people who live along the coast. We need to stand together to show the Trump Administration that we won’t let them drill our oceans, spill on our shore, or threaten our communities! We will stand up to that Fossil Fool in the White House and make sure his disastrous and greedy plan does not happen! We have been fighting drilling for 45 we will fight him for another 45 years. The only oil we want on our beaches is suntan oil!”
