Gloucester City Police Camera Registry Program Offered to Residents/Business Owners
Wednesday, April 24, 2019
GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ --Gloucester City Police Department is asking residents and business owners with surveillance cameras to help them fight crime in the city by registering their cameras with the department. The program is explained in the following statement.
The Gloucester City Police Department is committed to our partnership with the residents and business owners in our community. In an effort to enhance this partnership, we have created a surveillance camera registry system. Many business owners and residents currently operate surveillance systems at their businesses and homes. As crimes occur nearby, they are not always aware that their system may have captured pertinent information that could help facilitate our investigation, thus keeping our community safer. In turn, the police are not always aware who may have this potentially vital information. We are asking residents and business owners throughout the city to register their privately owned surveillance camera systems.
Using the geographic locations of the registered cameras, the Gloucester City Police Department will be able to directly e-mail or call residents or business owners in an area where a crime has occurred. A typical e-mail may ask the resident to check their video surveillance system for a specific date and time for video capturing a suspect, vehicle or a crime. If the resident finds any video evidence, they can contact the Police Department to make arrangements for video retrieval. We then may be able to use the information or footage obtained from the security cameras to assist in the apprehension and prosecution of the criminals involved.
Camera registration is voluntary and there is no cost associated with the registration. Registering your information DOES NOT provide the Gloucester City Police Department with direct access to your camera. You may delete your registration at any time. An individual’s personal information will be kept confidential unless subject to disclosure by court order. Your information will be accessed by detectives investigating a crime in the vicinity of where your camera is located. You will only be contacted by detectives in the future if there is a criminal incident in the vicinity of your security camera.
Residents and business owners who register their security cameras will receive a window sticker to show they are participating in the program.
Anyone interested can register their cameras by going to the Gloucester City Police Department’s Crime Map and clicking the “register cameras” button at the top right hand side of the page. The Crime Map can be found at https://www.crimereports.com/agency/gloucestercity_nj and there is no cost to register your cameras. You will be prompted to create an account after which you can register your camera. Your account with Crime Reports will also allow you to receive crime alerts for your neighborhood.
