GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ --On Friday, March 1, 2019 at approximately 07:48 AM, the Gloucester Township Police Department responded to 420 S. Black Horse Pike (Our Lady of Hope Regional School) for a report of heavy smoke coming from one of the buildings. Upon officers arrival, heavy smoke was observed coming from the roof and soffit areas of the special classes building (Art, Library, Science and Computer Lab). The caller, who was a maintenance worker at the school, reported the incident.

Gloucester Township Fire Units and Gloucester Township EMS Units responded to the scene. Fire Units confirmed an active fire in the ceiling / roof of the building. The fire was quickly placed under control and did not damage the entire building.

Gloucester Township OEM also responded. The school was closed due to the inclement weather and no staff or students were on location during the fire. This fire is under investigation by the Blackwood Fire Marshal and the Camden County Fire Marshal's Office.

This is a reminder to check your fire suppression systems and alert / audible alarm systems to ensure they are operational. Smoke alarms are a key part of any fire escape plan. When there is smoke, there is fire which can spread quickly. Working smoke alarms give you early warning, so you can get outside quickly.
