NJ NEWS COMMONS: NEWARK MAYOR'S SALARY MAY INCREASE BY $50K A YEAR

 

Two months after Newark's finances were released from state oversight, a measure to hike city administrators' salaries has been advanced by city council. It includes a $50,000 raise for Mayor Ras Baraka, a $125,000 raise for the Director of Public Works, a $90,000 raise for the Public Health and Wellness director, and a $70,000 raise for the Director of Public Safety. MOTORISTS COULD FACE NEW PARKING TAXES IN SIX CITIES

On Thursday, the Assembly transportation committee approved a bill that enables Newark, Jersey City, Edison, Paterson, Elizabeth, and Woodbridge to collect a special 3.5% tax on parking fees in order to fund initiatives to "improve pedestrian access to mass transit stations." MORE THAN 1,500 LAYOFFS ARE COMING AT 9 NJ BUSINESSES

Over 1,500 people will lose their jobs before May 31, according to lists compiled by Tom Davis, a senior regional editor for Patch. HERE'S WHAT NJ IS DOING TO FIGHT TEEN VAPING EPIDEMIC

The myth that JUUL is safer than cigarettes is so pervasive that teen vaping is up 78%, according to a recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study and an FDA report. Yet "a single JUUL pod can contain about the equivalency of nicotine as a pack of cigarettes," a CDC scientist said. Using tobacco tax funding, the New Jersey Prevention Network is working at "getting the youth involved" to "figure out [...] the solutions and really to change that culture within their schools,” said CEO and executive director Dianne Litterer.
