NJ News Commons: A TOUR INSIDE THE ESSEX COUNTY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

The director of the Essex County Correctional Facility — which was recently rebuked by a federal report outlining several deficiencies found at a surprise visit in July — took NJTV News on a tour inside the jail, which houses hundreds of immigrant detainees. The jail was found to be in violation of its contract with the federal government. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) pays the Newark jail more than $100 per detainee per day. OFFSHORE WIND COMPANY MIGHT (RE-)USE POWER PLANTS

Ørsted has confirmed that it is collecting data to shape a renewable energy project that could produce 1,100 megawatts of electricity. The plan relies on two power plants — Oyster Creek (which shut down in September) and B.L. England — to connect its wind turbines to the energy grid. The B.L. England plant, which is set to be part of the South Jersey Gas pipeline (opposed by environmentalists), is scheduled to close in May. (Press of Atlantic City)

JERSEY CITY COUNCIL APPROVES NEW POLICE CONTRACT

Under a new police contract green-lit by the Jersey City Council last week, first-year officers will be paid $41,000 per year. It's a $4,000 raise, yet still less than the city's $62,700 median household income. The contract, which ends in 2024, is a brief break from the long negotiation between the police union and Mayor Steve Fulop's administration, with much tumult along the way. (Jersey Journal)
