NJ DOUBLES SECURITY FUNDING FOR PRIVATE SCHOOLS

On Tuesday, Gov. Phil Murphy signed two bills designed to make schools and places of worship safer. One bill (A4597) will devote $11.3 million to double security funding at Screen Shot 2018-12-14 at 13.45.53private schools, which teach about 150,000 students statewide. Another bill (A3906) expands a security grant program that enables religious nonprofits to buy equipment and hire guards. (The Record)

JERSEY CITY NONPROFIT FIRES FORMER GOV. MCGREEVEY

The Jersey City Employment and Training Program voted 5-3-1 on Monday night to fire its director, former Democratic Gov. Jim McGreevey (video). The prisoner re-entry non-profit did so without comment or explanation. No one has "given me the courtesy of a detailed reason why I am being dismissed," he said. McGreevey resigned abruptly in 2004, after coming out as a "gay American." He is the nation's first openly gay governor. (Press of Atlantic City)

CENTRAL JERSEY CHILD FIRST TO DIE FROM FLU THIS YEAR

The state health department has confirmed that a child in central Jersey has died from the flu. It's the first fatality this season. The CDC says New Jersey and New York are experiencing high flu activity this year. Some hospitals like St. Mary's in Passaic are imposing restrictions on anyone presenting flu symptoms. It's still not too late to get a flu shot, officials say. (Princeton Patch)

WHITE SUPREMACIST GROUP WILL MARCH IN PRINCETON

On Saturday, the New Jersey European Heritage Association will hold its first event of 2019: a march in Princeton. Called a "small white supremacist group" by the Anti-Defamation League, its last "march" was on Nov. 17, with members holding "IT'S OKAY TO BE WHITE" signs. Since March 2018, it has been active in Freehold, Hillsborough, North Bergen, and the Sourlands. (Planet Princeton)
