Drunk Driver Hits Fire Hydrant Causes Hazardous Road Conditions in Gloucester City

UPDATED: The name of the driver charged with this drunk driving accident by Brooklawn Police is Robert Meddings of Bellmawr, according to Brooklawn Police Chief Shamus Ellis

GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (January 10, 2019)(CNBNewsnet)--A section of South Broadway between Kohler Street and Jersey Avenue was shut down for approximately 18 hours after a fire hydrant was hit by a vehicle.

According to Gloucester City Police Lt. Steve Burkhardt on January 9, 2019, at 6:21 pm, officers were dispatched to Gloucester City Plumbing Supply, 520 S. Broadway for a hit and run motor vehicle crash involving one vehicle striking a fire hydrant. Upon arrival, the hydrant and water main were found damaged and flooding the roadway with water and mud. A description of the fleeing vehicle was provided by a witness and was broadcast to surrounding departments. A short time later, a Brooklawn Police officer observed a vehicle matching the description traveling on Rt. 130 and conducted a traffic stop. Subsequent investigation led to the positive identification of the vehicle and driver.
The (38) year old male resident ( Robert Meddings) of Bellmawr was arrested for D.W.I. at the scene by Brooklawn Police. No injuries were reported. South Broadway between Koehler Street and Jersey Avenue was closed to all traffic due to the extensive damage to the water main. On January 10th. at approximately 2:30 pm, the roadway was reopened."
